Commercial Description:
Contract brewed for Schmaltz Brewing Company. CREATION, 1996, C.E.: On the floor of a San Francisco Mission District loft, intimate friends squeeze luscious pomegranates by hand to brew the first 100 cases of the original HE’BREW beer. EVOLUTION: The culmination of the first decade of Shmaltz Brewing and a core offering for our second, ORIGIN renews this sacred covenant, sacrificing over 10,000 pomegranates for each precious hand-crafted batch. REVELATION, on-going: In Jewish tradition, pomegranates symbolize righteousness with seeds said to number 613, the total commandments in Torah. In Deut. 8:8, pomegranates, barley and wheat prove the bounty of the Land of Milk and Honey. The calyx atop the fruit inspired the original Jewish crown. One Persian hero of myth consumed a pomegranate and became invincible. Muhammad instructed: ’Eat the pomegranate, for it purges the system of envy and hatred.’ Newlywed Greeks eager for a family crush one under-heel for fertility. Buddha cured a child-devouring demoness of her evil habit by instructing her to eat a pomegranate. Whether for knowledge or temptation, for virtue or valor, for art or for love, revel in the sumptuous pleasure of ORIGIN. To life...L’Chaim!

Bottle (22oz). My bottle shared with blankboy, garthicus and tupalev. Clear amber, small diminishing off-white head. Sweet aroma, floral, tart fruit. Taste - mostly tart fruit, herbal bitter finish. Average, moderately acidic body - pretty tasty.

Nice thick chewy, nutty, mat forward aroma with strong and sharp underlying fruit. Very hazy amber-brown coloured body is topped by a generous and long lasting fine bubbled white head that laces the sides of the glass. Nice pleasant chewy toasty malts with fairly pronounced bitterness and pleasantly sharp fruit. Medium body with moderate, lightly prickly carbonation. Snifter. Cellar temperature. Bottle (Brewery Creek, May-08).

Reddish-orange colour with a little bit of haze and a light head. Big fresh whole grain aroma with a big splash of pomegranate, plus herbal and chocolatey nuances. Soft body bears lush malts, an evenhanded bitterness, herbal hops, whole grain bagels and again a distinct but understated pomegranate accent. The crystal malt chewiness builds on the palate, however, and this tends to become overwhelming before the glass is half done.

I’ve been jumping at anything pomegranate lately, not because it’s the current trendy fruit, but because it became the current trendy fruit just as I discovered I actually had two pomegranate bushes in the house I had just moved into. As for this beer, there’s really more malt than there is pomegranate. The fruit lends a very slight tartness and only a hint of that distinctive pomegranate flavor. It’s rare that I say this of a fruit beer, but I think I’d like to see more of the fruit showcased in this beer.

Pours a light amber, head is thin and white with small bubbles. There is a hint of pomegranate coloring in the lacing. Malty aroma with alcoholic fruit. Pomegranate taste is very evident up front; then malty amber characteristics try and come through. It ends dry with quite a bit of tartness on the tongue. This could be a little sweeter. Medium bodied, with well hidden alcohol. I was expecting a little more.

Clear amber, big bubbled off-white head. Nose is pomegranate stones and hops. Overall a bit stuffy. Flavor has citric fruits and strong pomegranate. Finishes dry and slightly tart, quite strong grapefruity bitterness. Medium bodied, spritzy citric palate. Hide it’s ABV totally. Interesting.

Clear with lots of fizzies. Smells funky. The flavor is really dry, and has a very bitter aftertaste. Not horrible, but not what I expected.
