Commercial Description:
Contract brewed for Schmaltz Brewing Company. CREATION, 1996, C.E.: On the floor of a San Francisco Mission District loft, intimate friends squeeze luscious pomegranates by hand to brew the first 100 cases of the original HE’BREW beer. EVOLUTION: The culmination of the first decade of Shmaltz Brewing and a core offering for our second, ORIGIN renews this sacred covenant, sacrificing over 10,000 pomegranates for each precious hand-crafted batch. REVELATION, on-going: In Jewish tradition, pomegranates symbolize righteousness with seeds said to number 613, the total commandments in Torah. In Deut. 8:8, pomegranates, barley and wheat prove the bounty of the Land of Milk and Honey. The calyx atop the fruit inspired the original Jewish crown. One Persian hero of myth consumed a pomegranate and became invincible. Muhammad instructed: ’Eat the pomegranate, for it purges the system of envy and hatred.’ Newlywed Greeks eager for a family crush one under-heel for fertility. Buddha cured a child-devouring demoness of her evil habit by instructing her to eat a pomegranate. Whether for knowledge or temptation, for virtue or valor, for art or for love, revel in the sumptuous pleasure of ORIGIN. To life...L’Chaim!

Red pomegranate seed color. Leaves nice lace. Aroma of pomegranate, grain and hop: straightforward. Some cloying crystal malt in the aftertaste and a little on the thick, mealy, heavy side. Still it’s a pretty fun fertile crescent concept beer.

22oz Bottle Pours out an amber topped with a off white head. A nice aroma of sweet fruit. Tast this baby knocked off my socks. Very bitter I would guess the Pomegranate had some thing to do with this.

Pour is light orangey amber with a thin white head...smell is faintly hoppy with some grapefruit along with a light fruity sweetness...what a boring beer flavorwise...faintly sweet with some light malty flavors (thinly caramel)...a hint of tart sweetness of pomegranate (I might only think that is what it is because of the label)...a gentle little bitterness finishing it off...

22oz bottle. Wow... really not a lot going on with this beer at all. And what is happening isn’t put together all that well. Faint aroma of toast with the smallest hint of fruit and yeast. Pours full bright copper. Grassy and dry on the tongue. Aggressively hopped with raw toasted malt with the fruit showing on the backside but not in a good way. Too bad, this could have been really good.

22 oz bottle. Light copper colour. Crystal clear. Medium-sized off-white head that contains a lot of proteins and cligs nicely, but oddly, to the glass. Notes of pepper and sharp yeast in the nose. Some distant rich dark malts. Red berries, pomegranates perhaps (yeah), but is is hard to tell. Mellow, but rich malt flavours. Long-lasting gently crisp hop bitterness. Alcohol noticeable.

Bottle: Amber pour with a smaller sandy head. Light lacing. Nose is earthy and fruity. Bits of maltiness. Flavor was dry and fruity, but without the sweetness. Some maltiness pokes through, but the florals drown it out. Muddled.

Bottle: Copper color, nice light head and lacing. Nose of light malt and bright fruit, some dust and hop notes. The flavor is dry, exceptionally dry. Metallic finish and a moderate mouthfeel. Some tangy pomegranate notes that don’t blend well with hop and malt. Nice try though.
