Commercial Description:
Contract brewed for Schmaltz Brewing Company. CREATION, 1996, C.E.: On the floor of a San Francisco Mission District loft, intimate friends squeeze luscious pomegranates by hand to brew the first 100 cases of the original HE’BREW beer. EVOLUTION: The culmination of the first decade of Shmaltz Brewing and a core offering for our second, ORIGIN renews this sacred covenant, sacrificing over 10,000 pomegranates for each precious hand-crafted batch. REVELATION, on-going: In Jewish tradition, pomegranates symbolize righteousness with seeds said to number 613, the total commandments in Torah. In Deut. 8:8, pomegranates, barley and wheat prove the bounty of the Land of Milk and Honey. The calyx atop the fruit inspired the original Jewish crown. One Persian hero of myth consumed a pomegranate and became invincible. Muhammad instructed: ’Eat the pomegranate, for it purges the system of envy and hatred.’ Newlywed Greeks eager for a family crush one under-heel for fertility. Buddha cured a child-devouring demoness of her evil habit by instructing her to eat a pomegranate. Whether for knowledge or temptation, for virtue or valor, for art or for love, revel in the sumptuous pleasure of ORIGIN. To life...L’Chaim!

Bottle. Small fizzy off-white head tht mostly diminished with very little lacing, cloudy, carbonation was fizzy, lively and fast rising, and the hue was golden amber. Nose was sweet, fruity, bitter, and lightly malty. Flavor was bitter, hoppy, sweet fruity. Tingly mouthfeel and medium body. The flavor was not as enticiing as the aroma IMO. I just could not acquire a liking for the flavor as it did not come together for me and definitely left me not saying "more please"?

Aroma is hoppy with fruity notes (pomegranate). Pours a cloudy brown with little head. Flavor not too bad, it definitely has a hoppy finish with some fruit up front. Watery on th palate. It’s really not as fruity as I was expecting the fruit is masked by the hops.

Aroma of pomegranate and fruity malts with a moderate amount of alcohol. Cloudy orange color with a small white head. Mild malt taste with a little alcohol burn into the finish. Good palate but light for the alcohol finish.

Draft at Redlight. Ah my first pomegranate beer and I didn’t even realize so at first. The sharpness of the poms created a grainy wheaty rye type flavor that I misinterpreted at first, but then the pom came through clearly. Medium palate, fairly sweet.

On tap at Redlight. Mostly clear amber pour with thin floes of white head. Slightly fruity aroma but mostly light malts. Mild berry-like fruity sweetness to start. Kind of has a fruit punch like taste. No real horrible qualities, but the fruit is hardly there, and what’s left isn’t interesting at all.

22 oz bottle. Pours golden amber with 1 cm almost white head that is slowly diminishing. Aroma is sweet with fruit and malt and slight hops. Initial flavor is sweet with a hint of the pomegranate. Flavor changes to become more balanced by the end from the hops. Aftertaste still has some fruit taste to it and is moderately lasting. Slight lacing, light body, light carbonation, and not a whole lot of alcohol noted. Drinkable if you can tolerate fruity beers, otherwise it fits the mold.
