Commercial Description:
Contract brewed for Schmaltz Brewing Company. CREATION, 1996, C.E.: On the floor of a San Francisco Mission District loft, intimate friends squeeze luscious pomegranates by hand to brew the first 100 cases of the original HE’BREW beer. EVOLUTION: The culmination of the first decade of Shmaltz Brewing and a core offering for our second, ORIGIN renews this sacred covenant, sacrificing over 10,000 pomegranates for each precious hand-crafted batch. REVELATION, on-going: In Jewish tradition, pomegranates symbolize righteousness with seeds said to number 613, the total commandments in Torah. In Deut. 8:8, pomegranates, barley and wheat prove the bounty of the Land of Milk and Honey. The calyx atop the fruit inspired the original Jewish crown. One Persian hero of myth consumed a pomegranate and became invincible. Muhammad instructed: ’Eat the pomegranate, for it purges the system of envy and hatred.’ Newlywed Greeks eager for a family crush one under-heel for fertility. Buddha cured a child-devouring demoness of her evil habit by instructing her to eat a pomegranate. Whether for knowledge or temptation, for virtue or valor, for art or for love, revel in the sumptuous pleasure of ORIGIN. To life...L’Chaim!

Bottle at Chriso pre-GBBF tasting 09. Amber, lasting beige head. Musty malt, some malty fruit. Not great. Not very pommegrannitey either. Very sweet.

Cloudy, dark yellow color. Small off white head. Light malt/alcohol aroma and flavor. Avg duration. Smooth finish with a very light tartness. Slick texture. Moderate carbonation. Fair lacing.

Pours a cloudy orange with a white head. At first I was a little unsure but this beer really grew on me. Really a strong amber with a nice sweet malt, some caramel and hops. The pomegranate isn’t real noticeable until the end and gives it a kind of weird bitter tangy flavor. Kind of syrupy. Except for the aftertaste, pretty good.

I toast the Jewish high holy days with a bomber of Origin! Darkish amber pour with a trim head. Mild, fruity aroma. It goes down like a pretty serious hoppy amber. The pomegranate provides some tang and an interesting lightly sour finish. It is pretty impressive on the palate, but the flavor is less so. This is a plenty good amber, with a splash of pomegranate - but is pomegranate really the best thing to add to beer?

Bottled. An unclear amber beer with a thin white head. The aroma has notes of malt, caramel, dusty hops, alcohol, and over ripe fruits. The flavor is sweet with notes of fruits - citrusy, malt, and caramel, leading to a bitter finish with notes of pomegranates.

Bottled. Golden coloured. Unclear. Dense off white head. Fruits, sweetness in the aroma. Flavour is fruity, light herbal, has a citric touch. Is quite sweet and syrupy. Medium bodied. Dry. Fruity and light grapy end.
