Commercial Description:
Contract brewed for Schmaltz Brewing Company. CREATION, 1996, C.E.: On the floor of a San Francisco Mission District loft, intimate friends squeeze luscious pomegranates by hand to brew the first 100 cases of the original HE’BREW beer. EVOLUTION: The culmination of the first decade of Shmaltz Brewing and a core offering for our second, ORIGIN renews this sacred covenant, sacrificing over 10,000 pomegranates for each precious hand-crafted batch. REVELATION, on-going: In Jewish tradition, pomegranates symbolize righteousness with seeds said to number 613, the total commandments in Torah. In Deut. 8:8, pomegranates, barley and wheat prove the bounty of the Land of Milk and Honey. The calyx atop the fruit inspired the original Jewish crown. One Persian hero of myth consumed a pomegranate and became invincible. Muhammad instructed: ’Eat the pomegranate, for it purges the system of envy and hatred.’ Newlywed Greeks eager for a family crush one under-heel for fertility. Buddha cured a child-devouring demoness of her evil habit by instructing her to eat a pomegranate. Whether for knowledge or temptation, for virtue or valor, for art or for love, revel in the sumptuous pleasure of ORIGIN. To life...L’Chaim!

22 oz. brown bomber bottle. No freshness date seen. Poured out a deep red color, with pinkish highlights around the edges. Aromas are of caramel malts, earthy hops, some fruit. Flavors are mostly malts, with some fruit in the background. Medium mouthfeel, OK body. Nothing to write home about.

A bit of a tan head; aroma has a bit of the pomegranate; color is copper; very bitter, astringent, grapefruit; clean, if a bit light; good refreshing beer, but definitely not a sit down and enjoy beer

From a bottle--Poured an amber body with a medium whitish head. Nose of sweet dark fruits and malts and touched with a it of tangy hops. Smooth, silky body with sharp citrus notes. Very nice beer.

22 oz bomber. Bought it purely on the funny name. Aroma of pommegranate is moderate, taste is very light, kind of hard to detect. No real alcohol taste. Sharp aftertaste.

Soapy and oxidative nose with mild astringency. Herbal and soapy palate with more astringency. Metallic finish.

The smell is faintly sweet. The appearance is a watery reddish amber colour. The flavor is to me totally unique. At first, my mouth didn’t know what to think. I let it sit there and thought about it. It is sweet, cloying, and crisp if I may say so, with a lingering, bittersweet aftertaste to haunt you (in good spirits, of course). The flavour is not my favourite, but the palate is simple and yet beautiful. I also like the label that says Hebrew: The Chosen Beer, which made me buy it, and the interesting history behind Jewishness and righteousness. I like it.

22 oz bottle. Pour is a little light with a thin white head. Aroma is pretty mild, with slight notes of fruits. Flavor is pretty mild with a very tart (and sweet at the same time). Slight alcohol hint. It was decent.
