Commercial Description:
Contract brewed for Schmaltz Brewing Company. CREATION, 1996, C.E.: On the floor of a San Francisco Mission District loft, intimate friends squeeze luscious pomegranates by hand to brew the first 100 cases of the original HE’BREW beer. EVOLUTION: The culmination of the first decade of Shmaltz Brewing and a core offering for our second, ORIGIN renews this sacred covenant, sacrificing over 10,000 pomegranates for each precious hand-crafted batch. REVELATION, on-going: In Jewish tradition, pomegranates symbolize righteousness with seeds said to number 613, the total commandments in Torah. In Deut. 8:8, pomegranates, barley and wheat prove the bounty of the Land of Milk and Honey. The calyx atop the fruit inspired the original Jewish crown. One Persian hero of myth consumed a pomegranate and became invincible. Muhammad instructed: ’Eat the pomegranate, for it purges the system of envy and hatred.’ Newlywed Greeks eager for a family crush one under-heel for fertility. Buddha cured a child-devouring demoness of her evil habit by instructing her to eat a pomegranate. Whether for knowledge or temptation, for virtue or valor, for art or for love, revel in the sumptuous pleasure of ORIGIN. To life...L’Chaim!

22 oz bottle. Pour is a little light with a thin white head. Aroma is pretty mild, with slight notes of fruits. Flavor is pretty mild with a very tart (and sweet at the same time). Slight alcohol hint. It was decent.

22 oz bottle. Pours a clear copper with a thin white head that quickly diminishes to a wispy film and collar. The aroma is pretty subdued - sweet caramel malts and pomegranate and a little spicy alcohol. The flavor is sweet washed out fruits followed by a spicy bitter (grassy hops) alcoholic finish. The mouthfeel is medium with low carbonation and a little thin. Overall, a decent beer.

I was highly impressed with this beer. High alcohol content cleverly hidden behind infused pomegranate juice, which balances well with malt bill. Somewhat of a sweet finish. Pours beautiful true amber, head slowly disappates to lace. Hints to sour, and of blackberry, rosehips, raison. Texture smooth and soft; slight syrup feel. A pleasant surprise.

22 ounce bottle. The bottle declares this to be an "Imperial Amber Ale brewed with luscious pomegranate juice." I declare this to be good. The pour is beautiful. A thin white head floats on a golden-orange body that has a faint pink glow. The carbonation is lively and there is minor lacing. The aroma hints of graham cracker, berries, and raisins. The taste is mostly dry and tart, with a hint of sweet honey or caramel. The tartness, I assume, is from the pomegranate juice. There is a slight bite when the ale touches the tongue, although not the alcohol flavor I expected. Perhaps it is tempered somewhat by the pomegranate. The carbonation dances over the tongue and palate. This is really good stuff. The wife made a green salad of romaine lettuce, tomato, cucumber, and radish in a balsamic vinaigrette dressing, and oven poached salmon in a dill, Vidalia onion, and cucumber relish for dinner. The Origin Pomegranate played nicely against the tartness of both the salad and the salmon. The only drawback was the Vidalia onion, which tried to overpower the rest of the meal.

The aroma is pretty subdued - sweet caramel malts and pomegranate and a little spicy alcohol.

The flavor is sweet washed out fruits followed by a spicy bitter (grassy hops) alcoholic finish. The mouthfeel is medium with low carbonation and pretty watery.

Overall, a decent beer but pretty subdued and bland. This seems very similar to the Genesis 10:10 especially after reviewing my notes for that.

Pours dark amber with a fully receding off-white head. Aroma of sweet caramel, fruity hops, and pomegranate. Taste is fruity, lightly resinous and malty sweet with citric fruitiness. The malt bill is similar to an IPA without the massive hop load. Mouthfeel is full bodied, sticky with moderate carbonation. Not bad, not great.
