Commercial Description:
Contract brewed for Schmaltz Brewing Company. CREATION, 1996, C.E.: On the floor of a San Francisco Mission District loft, intimate friends squeeze luscious pomegranates by hand to brew the first 100 cases of the original HE’BREW beer. EVOLUTION: The culmination of the first decade of Shmaltz Brewing and a core offering for our second, ORIGIN renews this sacred covenant, sacrificing over 10,000 pomegranates for each precious hand-crafted batch. REVELATION, on-going: In Jewish tradition, pomegranates symbolize righteousness with seeds said to number 613, the total commandments in Torah. In Deut. 8:8, pomegranates, barley and wheat prove the bounty of the Land of Milk and Honey. The calyx atop the fruit inspired the original Jewish crown. One Persian hero of myth consumed a pomegranate and became invincible. Muhammad instructed: ’Eat the pomegranate, for it purges the system of envy and hatred.’ Newlywed Greeks eager for a family crush one under-heel for fertility. Buddha cured a child-devouring demoness of her evil habit by instructing her to eat a pomegranate. Whether for knowledge or temptation, for virtue or valor, for art or for love, revel in the sumptuous pleasure of ORIGIN. To life...L’Chaim!

Aroma is weak but sweet with a little pomegranate. Amber hue. Flavor is sweet and fruity with pomegranate prominent. Palate is watery. Sampled at the end of tasting so should probably try again.

A hazy light-orange beer with a foamy cream-coloured head displaying moderate retention. Aroma is quite sweet, some caramel and an earthy/woodsy quality. Toffee malt sweetness, earthy bitter hops, and a fruit-juice tartness that I cannot honestly distinguish as pomegranate (and I’ve just eaten one with my kids recently). Not bad, but I felt this to be uite imbalanced in the end-- an American strong ale with a sweeter-than-average profile.

Bottle: pours a deep dark bronze orange with a frothy off-white head. Has a sweet, fruity pommegranate nose with some carmel malty notes and grapefruity hops. Body starts fairly full and lightly caramely and fruity sweet with a drier, slightly tart and earthy bitter and peppery finish. A pretty interesting and mildly complex fruit beer.

Pours a reddish amber with a thin offwhite frothy head. Sweet aroma, citrusy/fruity, pomegranate I guess. Smells sort of like resiny hops, but definitely a fruit adjunct. The flavor was a little harsh, warm alcohol, sharp fruit flavor, not too hot but not terrible.

The color was a hazy light brown orange. The head was creamy and off-white. The aroma was sweet malt, wheat, slight acidity, and citrisy fruit. The flavor was alcohol, citrisy fruit, sweet malt, and a slight bitterness. The palate was well carbonated. The finish was warm.

The beer releases from the 22 ounce bottle reddish amber with a large creamy of white head that slowly fades leaving the lace a firm sheet upon the glass. Nose is rich in sweet malt, the big hop flowery aroma under pins the malt, citrus like in its crispness, fusel alcohol quite noticeable, grassy, start has a pleasant malt presence, alcohol and hops pound the palate, top is medium to full. Finish has a stern acidity; the hops potent, alcohol blast the taste buds. Aftertaste dry, most certainly a belly warmer, I think a little aging would help this beer, but for those who like “Big Hops” and “Big ABV”, this is your beer.

22oz. Bottle: Medium sweet aroma. Smells of toasted malts, pomegranate, citrus, and caramel. Poured amber in color with a large, rocky, tan head that lasted throughout. Clear. Sparkling. Flavor is medium to heavily sweet and lightly bitter. Tastes of malts, caramel, pomegranate, salt, and some earthy, resiny hops in the end. Medium body. Average texture. Average carbonation. Sweet fruity/malty finish.

22 oz. bottle from BevMo LaJolla. Pours clear copper color with a hint of rouge and a small white head. Toasty malts in the aroma, sugar cookies, strawberry, herbs and floral hop notes. Flavor has a bit of toffee with berries (pomegranate most likely), floral hops, hints of lemon zest, subtle licorice undertones as well. Medium body and gentle carbonation. Interesting.
