Commercial Description:
Contract brewed for Schmaltz Brewing Company. CREATION, 1996, C.E.: On the floor of a San Francisco Mission District loft, intimate friends squeeze luscious pomegranates by hand to brew the first 100 cases of the original HE’BREW beer. EVOLUTION: The culmination of the first decade of Shmaltz Brewing and a core offering for our second, ORIGIN renews this sacred covenant, sacrificing over 10,000 pomegranates for each precious hand-crafted batch. REVELATION, on-going: In Jewish tradition, pomegranates symbolize righteousness with seeds said to number 613, the total commandments in Torah. In Deut. 8:8, pomegranates, barley and wheat prove the bounty of the Land of Milk and Honey. The calyx atop the fruit inspired the original Jewish crown. One Persian hero of myth consumed a pomegranate and became invincible. Muhammad instructed: ’Eat the pomegranate, for it purges the system of envy and hatred.’ Newlywed Greeks eager for a family crush one under-heel for fertility. Buddha cured a child-devouring demoness of her evil habit by instructing her to eat a pomegranate. Whether for knowledge or temptation, for virtue or valor, for art or for love, revel in the sumptuous pleasure of ORIGIN. To life...L’Chaim!

Surprising bitter after-taste. Amber orange color. Pomegranate aroma is modest, but flavor comes through. Unique brew!

22 ounce bottle purchased at BevMo in Vacaville, CA. Fruity, floral, musty aroma. A little minty, too. This is a weird aroma, that is not overly enjoyable. Something about it reminds me of a dentist’s office. Transparent light amber body with a small, quickly dissipating off yellow head. Scant lacing. Fruity, sweet, juicy start, which I presume is the pomegranate flavoring. Becomes spicy, peppery, and roasted in the middle, which also has some ethanol present, too. Finishes sort of rubbery and tart with some of the fruity pomegranate notes. Very awkward. I wasn’t a fan of their other pomegranate beer, either.

Tap at Blind Tiger NYC out of a snifter. Mild aroma of hops with a very small amount of fruitiness. Orangey red with a small tan head. Very clean refreshing flavor. Not much pomegranate good hops in the finish. Good refreshing beer I’d drink again.

Bottle shared by nolankowal: Pours a clear orange gold in color with a loose white head. Aroma, fruits, light malts, some caramel. Flavor, fruity, pale malts, caramel, and a little tangy. Not bad.

Bottle sampled. Pours a deep amber with a small off-white head. Aroma of sweet malt, brown sugar, earthy hops, and light fruit. Flavor of sweet caramel malt, hops, toffee, and a hint of grapefruit with a bitter sweet finish.

Sweet aroma with a hint of hops. A light copper color...not much head retention. Quite complex...malt, fruit, hop...good balance though. Palate is thin and does not finish well.

22oz bottle. Decent sweet fruity aroma. Amber body with dirty white head. Flavor had a good dose of sweet fruit and some barley grain in the background. Medium to thicker body texture and little sluggish going down the hatch. One of those complex beers for me to figure out.
