Commercial Description:
Contract brewed for Schmaltz Brewing Company. CREATION, 1996, C.E.: On the floor of a San Francisco Mission District loft, intimate friends squeeze luscious pomegranates by hand to brew the first 100 cases of the original HE’BREW beer. EVOLUTION: The culmination of the first decade of Shmaltz Brewing and a core offering for our second, ORIGIN renews this sacred covenant, sacrificing over 10,000 pomegranates for each precious hand-crafted batch. REVELATION, on-going: In Jewish tradition, pomegranates symbolize righteousness with seeds said to number 613, the total commandments in Torah. In Deut. 8:8, pomegranates, barley and wheat prove the bounty of the Land of Milk and Honey. The calyx atop the fruit inspired the original Jewish crown. One Persian hero of myth consumed a pomegranate and became invincible. Muhammad instructed: ’Eat the pomegranate, for it purges the system of envy and hatred.’ Newlywed Greeks eager for a family crush one under-heel for fertility. Buddha cured a child-devouring demoness of her evil habit by instructing her to eat a pomegranate. Whether for knowledge or temptation, for virtue or valor, for art or for love, revel in the sumptuous pleasure of ORIGIN. To life...L’Chaim!

Bottle: Fiery amber, very clear, moderate dishwater like head, falls quickly, sparce lacing.   After a while, no head, no bubbles, no lacing... what gives?   This ain’t no old brew neither.   Moving on... Meaty malt oriented nose.   Pomegranate?   Slight phenols, alcohol, and flora on the nose.   Seems sickly sweet.   Subtle pomegrante on the tongue.   Malty, definitely malty, with a warming alcohol tinge.   Fruit aspect is light.   More of an Imperial Amber, if you could even call it that.   Moderate body and mouthfeel.   Has a greenish aspect to it, like its not yet ready to really enjoy.   Finish is a little thin.   Also seems a bit astringent.   This is much a Fruit Beer as it is an Imperial Stout.   Not all that fruity to me.   I don’t really know what to make of this one.   Some aspects of perfumed hairspray linger.   Ugh... if you are going to have a He’Brew I would stick with the Lenny’s R.I.P.A.

clear orange, fine off white head, touch of lace, sweet malt and tart fruit aroma with light earthy hops, fruity flavor with a nice tartness, balanced with some earthy bitterness, brewed with pomegranate, a bit too dry with the tart fruit but otherwise a nice complex character, interesting but the least favorate of the special series

In the bottle from Beertopia. Pours a deep gold with a small off white head. This beer has a fruity cotton candy-like aroma. This is very sweet at first, sort of tasting like Juicy Juice Very Berry. Then there’s a strong bitterness that washes over the tongue. The bitter flavor that you get if you chew fruit seeds too long. The fruitiness is then easily overwhelmed by the dense malt thickness and the cyanide-like bitterness. Then, toward the end of the beer at warming, everything reverses and the fruitiness returns and the bitterness becomes subdued.

In the bottle. amber color, slight head. flavor starts out like a hopped amber, then gets fruitier and fruitier - is that cherries? tangerine? pear? no, it’s pomegranate. with nice finishing hops. and good malt balance. An intriguing, tasty beer.

The fruit flavor here seems kind of sour and bittersweet (like an amber) with some malt to it. There seems to be some yeasty fruit which I’m not sure I find overly appealing even though Muhammad told me to drink this beer (the funny label). The aftertaste has a nice warm feel to it. It has some dryness and a decent sippable texture with some carbonation.

This beer poured hazy rust. The nose showed malt and some light pomergrantite. The malt showed sweeter on the palate and drove the pomergranite off the flavor a bit. It finsished with a sense of smoothness.

HeBrew Origin Pomegranate Ale 22 oz bomber Moderate pour in a shaker Poured a clear orange amber, with a peculiar slight red brightness to it, with a medium white fizzy mostly diminishing head. Smelt of strong caramel and pomegranate. Taste was upfront sweet caramel malt and pomegranate with a moderate bitter grassy hops and toasted grain followed by a strong bitter pomegranate flesh and toasted grain on an average to long bitter pomegranate finish. Palate was medium bodied, creamy, lively carbonated and strongly astringent. Overall, this beer captures the pomegranate taste very well, but it still somehow doesn’t work. Sometimes it feels too sweet from the strong caramel malt backbone, and sometimes it feels too bitter and a bit tart from the pomegranate. It just doesn’t work for me. Very interesting and unique though!
