Commercial Description:
Contract brewed for Schmaltz Brewing Company. CREATION, 1996, C.E.: On the floor of a San Francisco Mission District loft, intimate friends squeeze luscious pomegranates by hand to brew the first 100 cases of the original HE’BREW beer. EVOLUTION: The culmination of the first decade of Shmaltz Brewing and a core offering for our second, ORIGIN renews this sacred covenant, sacrificing over 10,000 pomegranates for each precious hand-crafted batch. REVELATION, on-going: In Jewish tradition, pomegranates symbolize righteousness with seeds said to number 613, the total commandments in Torah. In Deut. 8:8, pomegranates, barley and wheat prove the bounty of the Land of Milk and Honey. The calyx atop the fruit inspired the original Jewish crown. One Persian hero of myth consumed a pomegranate and became invincible. Muhammad instructed: ’Eat the pomegranate, for it purges the system of envy and hatred.’ Newlywed Greeks eager for a family crush one under-heel for fertility. Buddha cured a child-devouring demoness of her evil habit by instructing her to eat a pomegranate. Whether for knowledge or temptation, for virtue or valor, for art or for love, revel in the sumptuous pleasure of ORIGIN. To life...L’Chaim!

Bottle. Pours with a small frothy white head, mostly diminishing. Body is a clear orange amber. Aromas of light caramel malt, average hops..resin/grapefruit, wet cardboard and possibly pomegranate but I may be searching for that one. Medium body with a sticky texture, light flat carbonation. Finish is bitter in an harbally woody kind of way. Flavor is average in duration, moderately sweet, moderately acidic, moderately bitter. Not much pomegranate flavors in this "pomegranate ale", I would say it’s done in a subtle way and with balance. While I’d say there is nothing overtly wrong with the brew, there is nothing spectacular about it either. It does warm the belly some and hides the alcohol well. I doubt I’ll come back for another.

A clear dark amber ale with thick off white hed. Aroma is malty and hoppy, pungeant. In mouth, a very nutty malt, with roasted bitterness, and pinhey hops, maybe some notes of oranges, but no pomegranate. Body is rich and pleasing, and nice alcohol in final. Overall, a good strong ale.

Not too much interesting going on here in terms of intangibles, but this is a tasty change of pace brew. Smells sweet, almost sickly sweet; looks just like every other basic amber out there. However if it tastes bomb I could care less about these things. This bad boy is pretty fucking scrumptious. It’s sweet-ish, dark-ish, totally balanced. And at 8% it wrecks shops but you can’t taste a hint of it. I dunno about pomegranate, but this tastes like cherries with a bit of espresso and a splash of booze.

Pour is a hazy orange with a small white head. Aroma is decent with lots of piney hops. Flavor is very tart which is guess is the pomegranate but also has a fruity swetness along with some caramel malts. Not really a fruit beer, more of a decent IPA.

Medium coarse offwhite head. Red-brown body. Sweetish fruity licorice roasty aroma. Deep, sweet intense peppery fruity malty taste with metallic spicy notes. Some grape, as well. Bitter taste of grapeskins with sweetish malty notes lingers. Very nice! (0.65l bottle, thanks to gr0ve.)

bomber. slight bronze color with reddish hues. small light tan head is present but fades fast. aroma is made of two main things a tart fruitiness and piney cascade hops. medium to full body with pleasant juicy fruit flavors that are supported by a little caramel malt. honestly if they hadn’t advertised the pomegranate i wouldn’t have been able to guess. much like dogfish’s aprihop, the fruit is pretty subdued. the hops that stand out on the nose only briefly turn up on the end with a lingering tangy flavor for the finish

Bottle. Head is initially small, frothy, off-white, mostly diminishing. Body is medium amber. Aroma is lightly malty (toasted grain), lightly to moderately hoppy (resin), lightly yeasty (dough), with a light note of cranberry. Flavor is moderately sweet, moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, moderately acidic, moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation, lightly alcoholic. A re-tooling of Genesis 10:10, I guess? Not much goin’ on.

Bottled. Beer is clear light brown with a small, off-white, frothy, mostly diminishing head.
Not a lot of pomegranate character to be found. The aroma is malty with light notes of toasted grain, caramel; Hoppy with a light herbal note; Yeasty with a light note of doughy basement; Trace miscellaneous note of generic, tart fruit juice.
The flavor is moderately/heavily sweet, moderately acidic, moderately bitter with a long, moderately/heavily bitter, moderately sweet, moderately warm finish.
The body is medium, the texture is watery and the carbonation is lively.
