Commercial Description:
Contract brewed for Schmaltz Brewing Company. CREATION, 1996, C.E.: On the floor of a San Francisco Mission District loft, intimate friends squeeze luscious pomegranates by hand to brew the first 100 cases of the original HE’BREW beer. EVOLUTION: The culmination of the first decade of Shmaltz Brewing and a core offering for our second, ORIGIN renews this sacred covenant, sacrificing over 10,000 pomegranates for each precious hand-crafted batch. REVELATION, on-going: In Jewish tradition, pomegranates symbolize righteousness with seeds said to number 613, the total commandments in Torah. In Deut. 8:8, pomegranates, barley and wheat prove the bounty of the Land of Milk and Honey. The calyx atop the fruit inspired the original Jewish crown. One Persian hero of myth consumed a pomegranate and became invincible. Muhammad instructed: ’Eat the pomegranate, for it purges the system of envy and hatred.’ Newlywed Greeks eager for a family crush one under-heel for fertility. Buddha cured a child-devouring demoness of her evil habit by instructing her to eat a pomegranate. Whether for knowledge or temptation, for virtue or valor, for art or for love, revel in the sumptuous pleasure of ORIGIN. To life...L’Chaim!

Bottle 65 cl. Courtesy of yespr/Ungstrup. Clear deep golden with an off-white head. Oxidized fruity aroma. Medium body, sweet solid malts, caramel and fruit, with some hoppiness and a burning alcohol finish. The pomegranate is not that upfront. 130909

Read other high reviews for my technical opinion. Man o’ Man the guys who make these beers are "beer gods" Jesus would have been proud to serve this at the last supper! I am a hop head at heart and these guys are converting me. This is funky enlightenment!

This reddish copper ale poured with a thin bubbly off-white head and a fruity aroma. The flavor is mostly caramel malt, and unlike most fruit beers, is quite harsh. There is just a hint of pomegranate and lots of carbonation.

Pours a nice copper color with heavy carbonation and a large off white head. The nose is mild hop a touch of sweetness. Nothing noticeable pomegranate. Flavor is sweet, a little toffee, nice bitterness. The fruitiness is almost off balance with the beer. Definitely different but I can’t identify the pomegranate. For all that, there are no real flaws. It is just, different.

Enjoyed from a 22oz bomber in a tulip glass. The beer pours a deep amber color, resembling in many ways a traditional bock. That resemblence also carries over in the aroma and palate, as the beer shows a nose of deep and relatively complex maltyness. There is also a note of fruit in the nose, no doubt from the pomegranates. Malt flavors dominate the palate, definitely putting the fruit in a decidedly backseat. There was also a touch of alcohol in the nose and finish, but not to an extent that detracted from the beer. Overall, an interesting and pretty decent interpretation of a fruit beer.
