Commercial Description:
Contract brewed for Schmaltz Brewing Company. CREATION, 1996, C.E.: On the floor of a San Francisco Mission District loft, intimate friends squeeze luscious pomegranates by hand to brew the first 100 cases of the original HE’BREW beer. EVOLUTION: The culmination of the first decade of Shmaltz Brewing and a core offering for our second, ORIGIN renews this sacred covenant, sacrificing over 10,000 pomegranates for each precious hand-crafted batch. REVELATION, on-going: In Jewish tradition, pomegranates symbolize righteousness with seeds said to number 613, the total commandments in Torah. In Deut. 8:8, pomegranates, barley and wheat prove the bounty of the Land of Milk and Honey. The calyx atop the fruit inspired the original Jewish crown. One Persian hero of myth consumed a pomegranate and became invincible. Muhammad instructed: ’Eat the pomegranate, for it purges the system of envy and hatred.’ Newlywed Greeks eager for a family crush one under-heel for fertility. Buddha cured a child-devouring demoness of her evil habit by instructing her to eat a pomegranate. Whether for knowledge or temptation, for virtue or valor, for art or for love, revel in the sumptuous pleasure of ORIGIN. To life...L’Chaim!

Pours clear amber with a tan head that laces. Sweet caramel aroma with fruit and roast. Strong sweet taste of berry is balanced well by bitter roast and hops.

Attractive copper-amber color, slightly hazy. Two-finger head that settles in a rocky fashion Caramel malt provides a slight sweet smell along with a mild hop background. The taste is very similar to the smell. It has a brandy-like richness and alcohol burn on the tongue. The aftertaste is more of the same. I can detect light hop. I cannot detect any pomegranate. Oily palate. Basically a near Barley Wine.

"Burnt orange, thick fluffy cap with ok retention. I think I smell the juice but it’s getting lost in the piny hops, it finishes with caramel and some earth. Very malty with good hop presence, not to sure why this isn’t in the red ale section like it claims to be on the bottle. Don’t taste the juice at all or the 8% at all. Very tasty earth, wood, lemon maybe?!?!? Nope I taste the pomegranates now that it is warm, brew finishes slightly bitter. These marks are based on this being a red not a fruit beer."

(bottle - 22 oz) Clear amber color with a pillowy white head. Aroma is very light and fruity with a nice hint of pomegranate mixed with some flowery hops. Sweet and fruity at the beginning with a slightly bitter and floral hint, some light and tart pomegranates, and a bitter and cloying finish. Alcohol is well hidden.

I’m not a big fruit beer lover. I don’t think I would have this again. Too sweet. It doesn’t have what I call drinkability,

Aroma- resiny hops (that was unexpected!). Fruity aroma (pomegranate I guess, I’ve never smelled a pomegranate before). Appearance- Clear, copper in color, pronounced tan, creamy head. Taste- There’s a nice resiny taste up front that transfers from the aroma but then, just when the beer reaches the bitter recepters at the back of your tongue... poof... no more hops. Tastes of dark fruits, prunes mostly. Clean yeast profile, I can’t tell if the fruity flavors are from esters or the pomegranate. The fruity sweetness is a little sickly. Palate- Medium body, very little dryness, moderate carbonation. It’s interesting, but nothing about the beer is sharp and satisfying, except maybe the aroma.

650 ml. bottle. Pours a reddish brown with a very small, off-white head. Perfume, fruit, strawberries, and pomegranate in the nose. Medium carbonation with a medium-light mouthfeel. A mix of pomegranate and heavy hops on the palate. The mix of citrus, pine, and pomegranate is odd at best. Lingering pine and citrus notes contribute to a long finish. Okay, but not great.
