Commercial Description:
Contract brewed for Schmaltz Brewing Company. CREATION, 1996, C.E.: On the floor of a San Francisco Mission District loft, intimate friends squeeze luscious pomegranates by hand to brew the first 100 cases of the original HE’BREW beer. EVOLUTION: The culmination of the first decade of Shmaltz Brewing and a core offering for our second, ORIGIN renews this sacred covenant, sacrificing over 10,000 pomegranates for each precious hand-crafted batch. REVELATION, on-going: In Jewish tradition, pomegranates symbolize righteousness with seeds said to number 613, the total commandments in Torah. In Deut. 8:8, pomegranates, barley and wheat prove the bounty of the Land of Milk and Honey. The calyx atop the fruit inspired the original Jewish crown. One Persian hero of myth consumed a pomegranate and became invincible. Muhammad instructed: ’Eat the pomegranate, for it purges the system of envy and hatred.’ Newlywed Greeks eager for a family crush one under-heel for fertility. Buddha cured a child-devouring demoness of her evil habit by instructing her to eat a pomegranate. Whether for knowledge or temptation, for virtue or valor, for art or for love, revel in the sumptuous pleasure of ORIGIN. To life...L’Chaim!

Bottle. Pours a darker orange color with almost no head. Aroma is sweet malts and fruits. Nice smelling aroma. Flavor is dark fruit and pomegranate. For a fruit beer not bad. My girlfriend loves this one.

Pours dark amber with off white head. Sweet malt and somewhat boozy aroma. Dark fruit and pomegranate flavors. Very sweet with a chewy mouthfeel. Intersting to try, but it’s not for me.

Pours amber with an obvious tone of red-purple from the pomegranate. Aroma is sweet and sugary, some sourness, and pomegranate. Flavor is tart from the fruit and has a grapefruity bitterness, but also sweet with caramel tones. Palate is nicely carbonated with medium body. Not bad, though not exceptional.

An amber pour with a small mostly white head. Aroma is sweet and has some interesting fruit characteristics. I would not have guessed pomegranate to be honest. Flavor has some tartness, some light malts, tart frutis, citrus and with that it contained a bit of fruity sweetness...very unique beer indeed.

Bottle from Willow Bend Liquors in Lutz, FL. Pours a hazy brown-yellow with a small off-white head. Nose is sweet malt with vinuous fruit, some sour tones, and some unbalanced hop presence. Flavor is like sour citrus, some malt, and a bit of spice. I do not get any pomegranate in the flavor or aroma.

Bottle form utobeer. Alround rating: Massive caramalt character, small chocolate hints, juicey fruityness, but the sweetness becomes over powering after a while.

Smells distinctly like a Belgium lambic, sweet with a large dose of pomegranate on the nose. A wickedly smooth and refreshing taste in the mouth that carried on through the palette. It was hard to believe that this beer contained 8% alcohol. The finish was lip-smackingly tasty and fruit-filled. A real winner for a fruit beer. Cheers.

Bomber: Aroma is dark fruit, malt characteristics, and a light backing of some hops. Appearance is a lightly amber golden with a medium sized off white head that diminishes into a soapy film. Taste has got a thick malt presence with some light pomegranate taste the become more prevalent in the back end and the aftertaste. Palate is nicely carbonated, bubbly, somewhat light and acidic. Overall, not a pomegranate bomb but a nice beer all around. It’s not the best fruit beer I’ve ever had but it’s growing on me. Plus I really like Pomegranates.
