Commercial Description:
Contract brewed for Schmaltz Brewing Company. CREATION, 1996, C.E.: On the floor of a San Francisco Mission District loft, intimate friends squeeze luscious pomegranates by hand to brew the first 100 cases of the original HE’BREW beer. EVOLUTION: The culmination of the first decade of Shmaltz Brewing and a core offering for our second, ORIGIN renews this sacred covenant, sacrificing over 10,000 pomegranates for each precious hand-crafted batch. REVELATION, on-going: In Jewish tradition, pomegranates symbolize righteousness with seeds said to number 613, the total commandments in Torah. In Deut. 8:8, pomegranates, barley and wheat prove the bounty of the Land of Milk and Honey. The calyx atop the fruit inspired the original Jewish crown. One Persian hero of myth consumed a pomegranate and became invincible. Muhammad instructed: ’Eat the pomegranate, for it purges the system of envy and hatred.’ Newlywed Greeks eager for a family crush one under-heel for fertility. Buddha cured a child-devouring demoness of her evil habit by instructing her to eat a pomegranate. Whether for knowledge or temptation, for virtue or valor, for art or for love, revel in the sumptuous pleasure of ORIGIN. To life...L’Chaim!

(22oz bottle) Purchased at Brewery Creek in Vancouver. Pours an orange body with light carbonation. Oily, malty tongue. Aroma of thick caramel malt, boozy. Flavour is too sweet, slight bitter hops make an appearance mid-palate. Good. 7/3/6/3/14

Nice beer, but missing something. Pours an amber color with a small off-white head. Aroma is where it really excels - piney hops, caramel malt, and some fruit. Taste starts off strong with caramel malt and pomegranate, then hops, and then...well, not much. The finish is a little disappointing. Palate feels more or less like your average IPA.

A cloudy light brown beer with a very short lived head. Aroma is fruity and a bit musty. Flavor offers more hop bitterness than expected but this is also a fruity beer with plenty of sweetness and floral flavors. It is multifaceted changing from a fruit to a bitter to an IPA and doing it a couple of times during my glass.

Reddish pour with white head. Sour, and very pomegranate-y. Yeah I know, not very descriptive of my, but that is the way it is. Salty finish, but the sour notes dominate. Not bad, and very unique. Watery mouthfeel.

bottle - Pours hazy orange with a thin, off-white head and smells of malt, spice, and a trace of fruit. It tastes sweet with a touch of bitterness in the finish. The dark fruit, pomegranate obviously but I wouldn’t have known for sure without seeing the label, is there but it’s pretty mild. Mostly it’s just sweet malt burying that 8% abv. It’s alright, but this brewery can definitely do better.

Bottle pours amber with a big fluffy head and lace sheets. The aroma is pomegranate, malt, and hops. The flavor is malty and sour, with hops in there - which is a bit odd since sour and bitter sometimes do not dance well together. The palate is pretty substantial. Overall, I’m not overly pleased. Meh, it sort of grows on you as it warms and you start to absorb the 8% ABV.

Pour is a fairly dark amber and a slightly off-white head. Mostly caramel malt and grain/bread in this one, some fruit and pomegranate. Finishes with some citrus and floral notes. Im not to excited about it.

Bottle. Pours a solid amber with a nice head and an aroma of malt, grain, and, if you inhale very deeply, pommegranite. Flavor is malty biscuit and rose hops with a burp of pommegranite in the finish. Nice mouthfeel. I’m beginninig to think all He’Brews taste the same, in general.
