Commercial Description:
Contract brewed for Schmaltz Brewing Company. CREATION, 1996, C.E.: On the floor of a San Francisco Mission District loft, intimate friends squeeze luscious pomegranates by hand to brew the first 100 cases of the original HE’BREW beer. EVOLUTION: The culmination of the first decade of Shmaltz Brewing and a core offering for our second, ORIGIN renews this sacred covenant, sacrificing over 10,000 pomegranates for each precious hand-crafted batch. REVELATION, on-going: In Jewish tradition, pomegranates symbolize righteousness with seeds said to number 613, the total commandments in Torah. In Deut. 8:8, pomegranates, barley and wheat prove the bounty of the Land of Milk and Honey. The calyx atop the fruit inspired the original Jewish crown. One Persian hero of myth consumed a pomegranate and became invincible. Muhammad instructed: ’Eat the pomegranate, for it purges the system of envy and hatred.’ Newlywed Greeks eager for a family crush one under-heel for fertility. Buddha cured a child-devouring demoness of her evil habit by instructing her to eat a pomegranate. Whether for knowledge or temptation, for virtue or valor, for art or for love, revel in the sumptuous pleasure of ORIGIN. To life...L’Chaim!

Terrapin & Friends beer dinner at Trappeze. Poured amber with a slim head. Aroma of biscuit malt, fruit, light hop. Taste is a little fruity and nicely malted, some tartness as well. Finishes a little bitter. Mouth is medium bodied and tart. Overall, a nice fruit beer.

Bottle. Pours a dark golden amber with a tan cream colored head. Ample malt with a hint of pomegranate or other sweet fruit on the nose, which is a bit tough to pick out, except I know I should be smelling pomegranate. Little bit of hops and almost a metallic taste on the finish.

Raspberry-amber with silken head. Mild fruit and hops play into the nose. Mildly hoppy, like an APA, with twinge of fruitiness. Alcohol is well masked, but can’t really discenrnable. Mild development of caramel, nuttiness, and fruitness.

Carmaly biscuit aroma. Fair carbonation. Redish-orange hue. Malt has strong presence much like a barley wine. Hops are very very low, and bitterness as well. Any bitterness comes from the tartness of the pomegranate. Tartness and frutiness mingle with the malty body. Easy to drink, smooth palate. Alcohol well hidden. Overall a very good beer.

This is a strange beer. It doesn’t taste like either an amber ale or a pomegranate. It does have a distinct citrus flavor, but it is more like a papaya.

Draught at Falling Rock Taphouse, Denver. Cloudy amber - white head. Belgian style, yeasty, wheaty, berries, fruity, bad sourness. Not very good.

Pretty mundane beer. I really didn’t taste any pomegranate, I don’t know that I would have even suspecting them had the label not been labeled. Just tastes like an amber beer really. Pretty uninspired.
