Commercial Description:
Contract brewed for Schmaltz Brewing Company. CREATION, 1996, C.E.: On the floor of a San Francisco Mission District loft, intimate friends squeeze luscious pomegranates by hand to brew the first 100 cases of the original HE’BREW beer. EVOLUTION: The culmination of the first decade of Shmaltz Brewing and a core offering for our second, ORIGIN renews this sacred covenant, sacrificing over 10,000 pomegranates for each precious hand-crafted batch. REVELATION, on-going: In Jewish tradition, pomegranates symbolize righteousness with seeds said to number 613, the total commandments in Torah. In Deut. 8:8, pomegranates, barley and wheat prove the bounty of the Land of Milk and Honey. The calyx atop the fruit inspired the original Jewish crown. One Persian hero of myth consumed a pomegranate and became invincible. Muhammad instructed: ’Eat the pomegranate, for it purges the system of envy and hatred.’ Newlywed Greeks eager for a family crush one under-heel for fertility. Buddha cured a child-devouring demoness of her evil habit by instructing her to eat a pomegranate. Whether for knowledge or temptation, for virtue or valor, for art or for love, revel in the sumptuous pleasure of ORIGIN. To life...L’Chaim!

Bottled. An unclear amber beer with a thin white head. The aroma has notes of malt, caramel, dusty hops, alcohol, and over ripe fruits. The flavor is sweet with notes of fruits - citrusy, malt, and caramel, leading to a bitter finish with notes of pomegranates.

Bottle 65 cl. Courtesy of yespr/Ungstrup. Clear deep golden with an off-white head. Oxidized fruity aroma. Medium body, sweet solid malts, caramel and fruit, with some hoppiness and a burning alcohol finish. The pomegranate is not that upfront. 130909

Bottle 65cl. @ Chriso’s pre GBBF Shindig ’09.
Clear medium orange amber color with a average, frothy to creamy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, caramel, moderate to light light heavy hoppy, grapefruit, orange, fruity notes - must be the pomegrante !! not that I can spot it without reading the label. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and bitter with a average to long duration. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20090801]

Bottled. Slightly hazy amberish orange colour with small off-white head. Aroma is mild barnyard along with apple and some earth. Flavour is very fruity, sour apples, and some mild toffeeishness. Also some mild notes of red berries. Not that exciting.

clear orange, fine off white head, touch of lace, sweet malt and tart fruit aroma with light earthy hops, fruity flavor with a nice tartness, balanced with some earthy bitterness, brewed with pomegranate, a bit too dry with the tart fruit but otherwise a nice complex character, interesting but the least favorate of the special series

Reddish-orange colour with a little bit of haze and a light head. Big fresh whole grain aroma with a big splash of pomegranate, plus herbal and chocolatey nuances. Soft body bears lush malts, an evenhanded bitterness, herbal hops, whole grain bagels and again a distinct but understated pomegranate accent. The crystal malt chewiness builds on the palate, however, and this tends to become overwhelming before the glass is half done.
