Pomegranate color. Sort of a beige smear for head. Medium dark fruit aromas - might be ripe fig. Near medium body with fizzy carbonation. Starts sweet and fruity (fig newton?). Lightly bitter. This is a weird combo which I have no recollection of tasting before. A little thin for the high ABV. Still, different is good. I can imagine coffee in here. Can you take seriously a brewer who never brews? Who always comes up with new strange stuff? Well, we better, cause no one else is coming up with crazy brews like these folks. Finish is damn near cola. Dry it’s not, but it has me believing it’s balanced. And the commercial blurb challenges the guys at Lagunitas for silly verbosity. I’m looking forward to the next release. Sweet aroma with hints of cocoa sweet fruit. flavor is somewhat pleasant with hints of pomegranate, chocolate, caramel, and some nuttiness. Missing that "oomph" that a big beer such as this should have though. Mouthfeel is thick enough. No the best from this novelty series, but a pleasant diversion. | 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 12/20 | Jun 6, 2008 22 oz bottle. Pours a ruby amber with a very creamy off-white head that retains fairly well and laces the glass.
The aroma is sweet caramel malts, figs, molasses, brown sugar and a little alcohol.
The flavor is some sugary caramel malts and strong fig fruitiness with some slight alcohol and a touch of a bitter finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and slightly watery with sharp carbonation.
Overall, it’s very one dimensional with sugary figs. Kind of ehhh for me, but could be awesome for a big fig fan. scrizzz (1347), kirkland, Washington, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jun 5, 2008 tawny colored, full dense head, faint aroma of fig and yeast. sticky sweet fig flavor. i usually like beers that have fig character, so it’s no surprise i enjoy this. the fig character is intense, but not sticky sweet like i thought it would be. there’s a lasting flavor to the mostly one sided experience, some traditional winter spices as well (nutmeg and clove). i expected something thick and heavy, bordering on experimental, and what I got was a beer that’s very tasty and satisfying. fattibobatti (246), Tallahassee, Florida, USA
