Commercial Description:
Contract brewed for Schmaltz Brewing Company. Sacred Species No.2 YEAR OF THE DATE "The righteous shall flourish like the Date palm." Psalm 92:12. Hark! The second coming of REJEWVENATOR, infused for 2009 with the sacred DATE. Jewish tradition celebrates two New Years: The first in Spring after the barley harvest. The High Holidays in Fall mark the creation of the world. Harvest to harvest - the perfect bookends for deliciousness! Dates were used to sweeten beer in Ancient Egypt as early as 3500 BCE. Pliny the Elder, 1st c. Roman naturalist, lauded Judea’s Dates for their succulence and sweetness. So important for food and shelter, the Date palm became a symbol for the Kingdom of Judea, stamped on the ancient and modern Israeli Shekel coins. Shaking your Lulav on Sukkot and covering your kosher Sukkah demands Date palm leaves. Palm Sunday reenacts the procession of Jesus into Jerusalem. In Arabic, "Tamr" is the 4th stage of a Date’s ripening. Mohammed: "Whoever eats seven fresh Tamr fruits at breakfast shallrise above magic and poison on that day." The Hebrew word for Date palm is "Tamar", commonly describing the beauty and elegance of a woman. Solomon’s sister was named Tamar. "The only difference between a date and a job interview is that not many job interviews have a chance that you’ll end up naked at the end of it." -Jerry Seinfeld. Like its Latin genus the Pheonix, rise and shine with our newest Double Date Shmoppelbock - and flourish! L’Chaim!

Bomber. Deep and bright copper when held to light that looks a little brown if not. The large head was medium khaki and it left a fair amount of lacing on the glass. The nose was very sweet with the dates and some green wood. There was also a little bit of toffee and chlorine treated pool water. The taste was sweet with the date fruit and old bread crust. There was also some peanut at the end of each drink. Overall, this is nutty, sweet and quite enjoyable. However, it is definitely a sipper.

22 oz. bottle. Pours a clear deep reddish brown with a moderate off-white head that lasted through two-thirds of the glass and left partial lace. Pleasant aroma of sweet malt and dates. The flavor is again sweet malt and dates with just a bit of brown sugar. This is definitely a sweet beer. The dates add a sticky, kind of syrupy texture to the finish, which I was ok with. This is not something I would sit and drink on a regular basis or in any great volume, but enjoyable as a change of pace.

Good, but too sweet for me. The sweetness greatly reduced the drinkability. Mostly malty dopplebock flavor. Full bodied, but not as creamy as some great dopples. Sweet dark fruits in the flavor. Finish was too sweet with mild alcohol flavor. A little more belgian double would have made for an interesting beer. Needed some balance.

22oz bomber. Pours a deep and brilliant copper with a thick but short-lived light tan head that leaves a scant few specks/spots of lace on the glass. Bubbles stream from the bottom of the glass - apparently endlessly. The aroma has a strong malt tang - caramel, plum, and honey on toast. There is a slight fruitiness in there, too - fig and banana maybe. The flavor follows the aroma: big malty flavor with lots of bready malts and a fair bit of malt sweetness with notes of honey, caramel, and fruit. The fruitiness is pleasant and accompanied by balancing neutral bitterness and subtle flavor of ethanol at mid-palate. The finish is dry and sweet with some slight alcohol warmth as it goes down. The mouthfeel is very full-bodied - thick and slippery. The suds lighten the texture a good bit - lots of carbonation, but luckily not so much as to be distracting or detrimental to its character. Overall, a very malty and decent brew. The label says "half doppelbock, half belgian dubbel". I’d call it more like 2/3 doppelbock. There are some fruity ester notes in there, but the beer’s character is dominated by a full and sweet munich malt character.

22oz bottle from BevMo. Pours a deep copper color with a 2 finger thick beige head, light lacing. Lots of toasted malts and dried tree fruits on the nose, mostly dates and plums. Flavor was fairly sweet and malty, faint booze in the finish.

I’ll say something. It’s very unique. But it is a combination to me that doesn’t quite work.

THOUGHTS: It really was like a fruity doppelback mixed with a dubbel. I never really smelled a date before, but I know the type of fruit it is so Im’ pretty sure this was full of dates, both in the flavor and aroma; and it worked incredibly well with the styles of beer blended here. I’m always impressed with He’brew’s decisions and beers. Even with all the flavor, the alcohol still shines in this, just like I like in a doppelbock. A really different spin on two styles I really like. TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a dark brownish, orangey red with a small to average, foamy, off-white head that mostly diminished, keeping a decent sheet and leaving good lacing. The aroma was heavy caramel and molasses; port, very light alcohol, I’m assuming dates, much like prunes, raisins, plums and grapes. The initial flavor was very sweet, slightly acidic and ever so slightly bitter; while the finish was extremely sweet, a little bitter, slightly acidic and ever so slightly sour with and average to long duration. It was nice but a little cloying. There was caramel malt, prune, raisin, grape, assuming dates, molasses, maple syrup, alcohol, slight hops and hint of chocolate or coffee. The medium body was syrupy with tingly carbonation and a lightly alcoholic finish.
