Commercial Description:
Contract brewed for Schmaltz Brewing Company. Sacred Species No.2 YEAR OF THE DATE "The righteous shall flourish like the Date palm." Psalm 92:12. Hark! The second coming of REJEWVENATOR, infused for 2009 with the sacred DATE. Jewish tradition celebrates two New Years: The first in Spring after the barley harvest. The High Holidays in Fall mark the creation of the world. Harvest to harvest - the perfect bookends for deliciousness! Dates were used to sweeten beer in Ancient Egypt as early as 3500 BCE. Pliny the Elder, 1st c. Roman naturalist, lauded Judea’s Dates for their succulence and sweetness. So important for food and shelter, the Date palm became a symbol for the Kingdom of Judea, stamped on the ancient and modern Israeli Shekel coins. Shaking your Lulav on Sukkot and covering your kosher Sukkah demands Date palm leaves. Palm Sunday reenacts the procession of Jesus into Jerusalem. In Arabic, "Tamr" is the 4th stage of a Date’s ripening. Mohammed: "Whoever eats seven fresh Tamr fruits at breakfast shallrise above magic and poison on that day." The Hebrew word for Date palm is "Tamar", commonly describing the beauty and elegance of a woman. Solomon’s sister was named Tamar. "The only difference between a date and a job interview is that not many job interviews have a chance that you’ll end up naked at the end of it." -Jerry Seinfeld. Like its Latin genus the Pheonix, rise and shine with our newest Double Date Shmoppelbock - and flourish! L’Chaim!

Bomber poured a clear reddish brown with a lasting tan head. Aromas of carmel, dates, cola, molasses and a hint of spice. Palate was medium to full bodied and smooth. Flavors of molasses, dates and burnt carmel with a smooth lingering fruity (dates) finish.

This was just put on draft here at Bodega Brew Pub in La Crosse, WI. Served with a small to medium off white head and a little lace. Color is dark amber with a little brown. Aroma is very mild. Flavor is not at all what I expected having read the comercial description. It’s ok, even kind of good, but more at "eh -". I’ve had a number of other beers with similar ingredients and this is like those, but underwhelming. Can taste the listed ingredients. Body’s on the light side. Do pick up on the alcohol in the finish. Kind of a yawner to me.

Pours a dark cola brown with a nice but quickly receding head. The nose is dark fruit and spice. Cinnamon, licorice, date and raisins. Pretty nose. Nice malt on the front followed by a lot of fruit. Definitely get date and strong licorice. Medium body and finishes clean.

Draft. Poured dark Small head. Very fruity/cinammony (figs?) and such, maybe not quite malty for a DB in my opinion.

Dark cherry color with a thin tan head. Aroma is like spiced rye bread with cinnamon and tangy raisins. Tastes very much as it smells, with tannic rye notes in the finish, with odd and somewhat medicinal fruit. $6/22oz

Pours bronze with a reddish tint and off-white head. The aroma has lots of dates, doughy malt and some sweetness. Medium body with some gentle carbonation and a bit of sharpness. The flavor starts with rich malt, dates, Belgian yeastiness, cardboard and a bit too much sweetness. The finish is medicinal. Fair at best.

Deep amber pour with a thick, sticky tan head. The nose is quite nice. Lots of sweet fig/date character along with a little bit of spiciness. Light rummy molasses character on the back. It is sweet and sticky but it manages to do that without being cloying. A touch of light clove lends this a fairly Belgian flavour. It’s another unique, but tasty brew and a solid effort from the folks at Schmaltz.

Dates, raisins, brown sugar and raisins in the nose. Clear, deep, dark ruby brown coloured body is topped by a decent, fine bubbled, off white head that recedes to a lasting cover. Dates, raisins and figs are sweet up front but hop bitterness is quite pronounced and balances things out in the finish. Medium body is quite dry with moderate carbonation. Tulip glass. Just above fridge temperature. Bottle purchased at Brewery Creek in Aug-09.
