Commercial Description:
Contract brewed for Schmaltz Brewing Company. Sacred Species No.2 YEAR OF THE DATE "The righteous shall flourish like the Date palm." Psalm 92:12. Hark! The second coming of REJEWVENATOR, infused for 2009 with the sacred DATE. Jewish tradition celebrates two New Years: The first in Spring after the barley harvest. The High Holidays in Fall mark the creation of the world. Harvest to harvest - the perfect bookends for deliciousness! Dates were used to sweeten beer in Ancient Egypt as early as 3500 BCE. Pliny the Elder, 1st c. Roman naturalist, lauded Judea’s Dates for their succulence and sweetness. So important for food and shelter, the Date palm became a symbol for the Kingdom of Judea, stamped on the ancient and modern Israeli Shekel coins. Shaking your Lulav on Sukkot and covering your kosher Sukkah demands Date palm leaves. Palm Sunday reenacts the procession of Jesus into Jerusalem. In Arabic, "Tamr" is the 4th stage of a Date’s ripening. Mohammed: "Whoever eats seven fresh Tamr fruits at breakfast shallrise above magic and poison on that day." The Hebrew word for Date palm is "Tamar", commonly describing the beauty and elegance of a woman. Solomon’s sister was named Tamar. "The only difference between a date and a job interview is that not many job interviews have a chance that you’ll end up naked at the end of it." -Jerry Seinfeld. Like its Latin genus the Pheonix, rise and shine with our newest Double Date Shmoppelbock - and flourish! L’Chaim!

22oz brown bottle served in a Duvel glass. Poured a clear reddish brown with a thin tan head. Good malty nose with some dark fruit like raisins. Solid malt base with some toffee. Nice rich mouthfeel, medium body. Hints of Belgian yeast spicieness in the finish. Very easy drinking. Don’t try to classify, just enjoy this one. These guys do malt very well. Another unique beer from Shmaltz. They can be hit or miss with their experimentation, but when they hit, I tend to enjoy it.

Diolch JoeMcPhee. Deep mahogany colour. Great off white frothy head. The beer looks great in the glass. Fresh aroma of spice, malt and hops. Slight hint of berries. Smooth, silky texture. Flavour is strong in fruit berries and slightly spiced. Full of flavour and well balanced. Rich, syrupy ale overall.

Pours a clear amber with no head to speak of. Aroma Yeasty, fruity aroma - no dates yet. Tastes of artificial flavour added to dental fluoride treatment. Complex, lingering finish - more of that dental taste but something else. Not entirely awful. Decent carbonation, crisp body. Good with meat and/or cheese, otherwise not all that exciting.

Bottle. Copper with thin head. Quiet aroma. Malt, spice and hints at rubbery malt. Peppery flavour and aftertaste. Meaty malt and dark fruit middle. Good but weird. I wouldn’t have this too often. Not exactly grooving on the spice and dark fruit. A bit of chocolate. Very spicy.

Bottle. Pours ruby brown with a moderately sized, cream colored head that quickly fades away. Aromas of caramel, malts and sweet fruits. The flavor was much of the same with some hints of bread and alcohol. Overall I have to say I prefer the previous Rejewvenator with figs. This was a nice take on a doppelbock though.

Seeing this advertized as half Doppelbock/half Dubbel (Crying out for a return of the "Ale" category!), I poured half of the bomber that I got from the Binny’s in Orland Park, Illinois, into a stein, the other half into a goblet. (I’m often a two-fisted drinker, so it was no big deal.) Nice looking beer either way, a clear reddish brown body with a tall, sustained manilla head. No lace. It has a sweet aroma of caramelly malt and dark dried fruit tempered by a whiff of alcohol. The flavor was even fruitier and hotter with alcohol. Somehow, it seemed less sweet than what the nose offered - which is dandy with me - and had a burnt smokey touch. It finished warm and sweet with a quiet touch of earthy bitterness. Okay.

2009 Year of the Date / Sacred Series No. 2

7/29/2009: He’Brew Rejewvenator 2009 pours beautifully into my 0.3 l Celebrator Doppelbock glass. The beer has a beautiful rusty amber color and lumpy, lasting head that’s the color of light brown sugar. There is plenty of sugary caramel malt in the aroma as well as a hint of yeast. The fruity dates also come through. I can’t wait to tast this! Yum! It tastes malty and somewhat sweet, but it definitely isn’t an over-done sticky malt mess. Rather, it is just right with some sweet caramelized malt/sugar balanced by a crisp grassy noble hoppiness like what might be found in a Pils. Chewy dried dates are clearly present in the flavor and there is a really awesome roasty/smokiness that works so well the other flavors. The beer is moderately thick and goes down quite smoothly. I love He’Brew beers and this one definitely does not disappoint. It is better than last year’s Jewbelation. Overall this is an extremely flavorful and solid Doppelbock-like beer that ranks right up there with the best of them.

22 fl. oz. bottle (Half Doppelbock, Half Belgian Style Dubbel / 7.8% Alc by Vol.) from Jungle Jim’s International Market in Fairfield, Ohio. Rating #30 for this beer.

Pours light mahogany into a trappist glass. Head quickly recedes to hug rim. Sweet pit fruit aromas. Thick and creamy - interesting mix of doppelbock and dubbel. Sweet dark dates, pit fruits and caramels. A little hot in the yeasty finish.
