Pours an orange color with a small head. Strong caramel and malt aroma. Taste is similar, but not very overpowering. Lots of taste, yet remains refreshing. I have to say this is the most unique bottle/packaging I have seen. Huge style points to Michigan Brewing for such a classic product. sirraffles (3), Michigan, USA does not count | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jun 4, 2005 Tried this one after hearing that it won a gold medal at the World Expo of Beer in the pale ale category. I think some of the experts here are missing the entire point of this beer. It is a great session beer, not meant to pucker your kiester. Nice copper color with little head. Taste is carmel, mild enough that it didn’t distract from food yet had enough flavor to keep my interest when taken alone. If you want to impress your friends serve something else, but if you want to have your friends enjoy a beer this is a good time beer. jtw (944), farmington, Michigan, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 11, 2004 i won’t lie. i bought this because i like baseball and had never seen it before. that aside, strong hop aroma, some piney citrus, and a little malt. i’m also not sure what "pre-prohibition style" means, but i enjoyed this one, especially considering how mild it is. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Oct 27, 2003 It's a beautiful copper/gold color with a thick tan head. Malty, slightly fruity nose. Nicely balanced, and very apparent crystal malts, as the BJCP guidelines call for in the style. IBU seems to fall in the proper 30-60 range, probably low 40s. Alcohol is 4.4%abv. Very rich and flavorful, slightly bitter finish is welcomed... DrnkMcDermott (1865), Downers Grove, Illinois, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Oct 31, 2003 Bottled. A good hop aroma asserts itself as you pop the top, always a good sign. Nice foamy head pours on top of a golden body. A great malty taste accentuated by lingering hoppy nose. You usually expect a licensed tie-in brew like this to be the usual pale pilsner (as in the 3 Stooges beer), but instead we have a nice ale outside of MBC's other styles.
Don't know if Helmar Brewing, the name on the label (licensed to MBC) really exists, but there was Helmar Tobacco company that issued some of the early baseball cards back in 1900s. Darkover (1317), Columbus, Ohio, USA

It pours a rich amber color with a creamy off-white head. The aroma is malty and fruity. Creamy mouthfeel, this has a good malt-to-hop balance for the style. Tasty, bitter finish.
