Commercial Description:
Marked by a distinctive malty flavor from the malt components in the blend, Cleary Red is a darker ale that even pale ale-beer drinkers will find extremely palatable.

On tap at the Escanaba brewpub. Crystal clear deep red amber, with a rim of white above. No aroma. I can’t pull anything off. Flavor. This is boring. A meaty, chewy old malt flavor climbs out of this one. Too much crystal, too much meat. No real malt intricacy and no hops to balance this off. Some too-warm yeast esters kick off a bit of gross twinge to the finish of the beer. Not entirely clean.

Crap was this bad. If this was in a bottle it would have been a drainpour. Nothing stood out with this beer. I literally put my beak into the liquid and inhaled and couldn’t pick up an aroma. The pour was a flat bubbleless orange with no head. Taste was weak and unexciting. I could taste a hint of biscuit and light malt with an earthiness to it, but it was so diluted I had to dig deep to pull that out of it. Terrible.

Pours a deep red / amber with an off-white head. I got a decent amount of fruitness and caramel in the aroma. A lot of sweetness of caramel with just a touch of hops to balance it out. Finished really dry, as with most beers from this place.

12/27/07 - Winter Road Trip ’07 - Draft sample at brewpub. Clear red w/ off white head, nice lacing. Sweet malt nose, caramel and fresh baked bread. May be some fruity yeast esters. Pretty big malt character, caramel and bread, leading to a dry, hop finish, floral and a touch of bitter. This is a decent offering.

On tap. Rich fruity malty aroma, with big buckwheat honey and biscuit nose. Deep coppery red clear with thin off-white lacing head. Medum body with medium carbonation, light carbonic fizz. Rather dry ale, with mild biscuit maltiness and stale nutty hop bitterness in the finish. Carbonic gaseousness and dry chalky after.

On tap at the Wausau brewpub on 6/24/07: Pours a dark copper mahogany with a thin-lacing froth of white head. Aroma of dry, earthy, lightly toasted malt and some mild hop presence. Body starts fairly full and lightly sweet with a touch of caramel and earthy dark malts along with a decent bittering hop balance. A pretty good red ale.
