Hereford & Hops Get Down Brown

On draught at the brewpub in Wausau, Wisconsin as "Better Brown Ale". Pours a clear, dark copper amber with a thick and creamy off white head that has good retention and excellent lacing. Aroma of dark, roasted caramel malt, a touch of chocolate, toffee and some flowery hops. Taste is smooth, creamy, medium bodied with some light carbonation. Flavors detected include dark roasted caramel malt, a touch of honey and some milk chocolate. Finish is semi-sweet, silky with a light toasted caramel flavor. A major improvement from their Brown Trout Ale from last year.

Poured from growler, courtesy of Naka from the Cranberry stie. Rich chocolate with coffee grounds, roasted nutty character, mild caramel. Tea leaves with mild fruity tang. Dark brown black clear, more like a porter in color, with thin head. Medium heavy body with light carbonation, though the latter is most likely due to travel. Starts rich with grainy acidic coffee notes, mild chocolate, and astringent malt sweetness. Quite a good dose of hop bitterness comes in quick, leaving a strong tea-like bitter coating on the tongue. Mild fruity tang and tobacco finish with dry nutty bitter after. Not quite the brown ale I’m used to, that’s for sure.

Growler pour courtesy of ’Naka. Pours porter-esque black/brown with dancing hues of red/amber. Roasty, old coffee nose that lingers to a brown sugar/molassas finish. Big roasty flavor with a sweet maltiness up front. Bleeds to said roastiness and then onto a stronger than usual hop finish that reminds me of bitter coffee with Kahlua minus the chocolate. Ok, that makes no sense, but whatever. Honestly is more of a Porter than anything. At any rate, this is a mighty tasty beer.

Had this at the Cranberry, PA site. It poured darker than a lot of brown ales I’ve had before. Had very little head and I couldn’t make out the color because of the usual dark bar lighting. Started with a good roasted malt character, though not as much as your typical brown. Finishes with a great hopped flavor that I’ve never found in a brown before. It is one of my favorite browns I’ve tried, but that may just be because it’s got 10 x the hops.

Sampled on draft at the Cranberry Twp PA location this beer poured a medium brown color with a small tan head. The aroma is sweet floral hops - stronger than is typical for this style yet fairly pleasant. The flavor is roasty malts, light floral hops and moderate fruity hops. The hops linger on the palate. Hoppier than a typical brown and I found this served the beer well. Was the pick of the litter of the non-seasonals.

Somewhat faint, roasted malt aroma with sweetness and moderate hops. Clear reddish in color. Thin, off-white head. Good lace. Thinnish flavor, but nice. Enjoyable. Somewhat dry and somky. Some low to moderate hops. At first sip, I wasn’t overly enamored of Get Down Brown, and in my mind compared it unfavorably to H&H’s Schwarzbier. However, I followed the Get Down Brown with the Schwarzbier in this sitting and enjoyed the Brown more. Imminently drinkable.
