Hereford & Hops Hefeweizen

On tap at the Escanaba location as the "German Weiss." Surely the same beer. Pours a murky, heavily clouded orange. Rim in white. Light clove phenol nose. A bit warm, as the lemon, banana and clove oil develop on the tongue. Chewy. Oily. A pretty classic hefe flavor. I want more carbonation, more hops and more brightness. This lays a little dead on the palate. A touch of phenolic astringency over a bit more alcohol. This is fine, but nothing that I’m going to get whipped up about. It’s classic, relatively clean, but missing the necessary carbonation or lightness.

On tap at the Wausau location. Lots of banana and faint cloves on the nose. Yellow color very cloudy. Strong banana flavor with light wheat and clove finish.

Sampled on draft at the Cranberry Twp PA location this beer poured a pale yellow color with a small white head. The aroma is lightly grainy and has a faint citrus element. The flavor is wheaty with a light citrus element and a mildly bitter finish.

Had to get a second sample, without the lemon. Cloudy white with lace. No aroma, first that reached me was above average carbonation. There is 25% wheat yeast, and its creamy, and with malt, drinkable. Medium mouthfeel. At the Pittsburgh brewpub.On sweet side.

Pours hazy orange color with tan-yellow head. Aroma of grains, citrus, sweet malts and hops. Flavor follows aroma very nicely. Not the best hefe I’ve had, but very good nonethaless.

Had this one on draught in Wausau, Wisconsin. Cloudy pale orange color with a thick yellowish head, with hops and baked bread in the nose, lemon, orange and cloves in the finsh. A good wheat beer.

On-tap at the brewpub: Straw gold carpeting of color with a sparkly white cap of medium height. Moderate lacing in spots and broken sheeting. Keeps a good skim the whole time. Aroma is quite plain. Just a small smacking of wheat induced incense and a smearing of tartly set lemon. Flavors bring the same tame action of low leveled wheat and a short tone of lemon spritz. Nothing to it really. Very average if not all together forgetful on the buds. Feel is just as lack luster. Smooth but plain and lacking any real hefe verve or qualities that should be in a hefe. Where’s the action? One of only a couple from Hereford’s that are a bit hard to get down and don’t make the cut.

"German Wheat" as it's known at the Wausau, WI location where I sampled it on draft, July 03. Opaque bright yellow, decent lasting head .. good malt, strong banana esters, medium sweetness, no real bite, nice body. Above average for the pub I thought.
