Commercial Description:
Gose is an oddball style of North German ale that is sort of a cross between a Belgian Wit and a Berliner Weisse. It’s brewed with 1/2 wheat malt, spiced with coriander. The fermentation is via ale yeast spiked with lactobacillus, so the beer has a definite tartness to it. Lastly, an addition of sea salt gives it a nice roundness and an interesting if slight saltiness.

Sampled at ABR 2009. First Gose I’ve tried. I like these sour beers that are balanced with sweetness. This beer fits that mold. Other than the hefeweizen and kellerbier, I haven’t been too impressed with Herkimer. However, this beer is good. Cheers!

I am not sure there should be any Belgian character, but it is a good, unusual beer anyway. Lots of salt and wheat. Some citrus. Well carbonated. Refreshing. This is the Herk’s best beer.

Cloudy pale yellow color with a medium head. Aroma of coriander and lime. Lemony wheat flavor, light tartness, and a dry slightly salty finish. I’m not sure if the Berliner Weisse part is traditional for Gose, but in any case, it’s a tasty beer!

A cloudy yellow beer with a holding white head, good lacing. Weak aroma of wheat malt and salt. Like its not obvious the salt they add to these gose beers. Flavor starts off sweet, quickly turns to bitter paper-like taste and finishes with sea salt, alas, the best part. Word. Reminds me of bbq sauce and the ocean. Maybe its the sweet skunkiness of the brewery... ewwwwww!

On draught at the Herkimer brewpub in uptown Minneapolis, Minnesota. Pours a hazy straw/lemonade colored brew with a fast dissolving white head that dissipates to a thin white ring and some nice lacing. Aroma of lemonade, coriander, a touch of white bread and some lemon zest. Taste is medium bodied, soft carbonation with flavors of multi-grain malt with wheat, coriander, some hint of banana esters, and tart lemonade. Finish is semi-sweet with a slow disappearing coriander and lemon aftertaste.

GABF 2008. Pale gold, cloudy body with a fizzy head of white. Notes of herbal coriander, lemon wheat, and a milky lactic acidity. Light bodied, moderately carbonated mouthfeel with a somewhat soft, chewy texture. Creamy wheat flavors up front on the palate, followed by a pleasant herbal spiciness. Light to moderate wheat and lactic acidity with a cleansing lemon quality. Lightly salted in the finish, which lingers satisfyingly with more coriander spice. Rich, yet delicate - a terrific gose.

Murky and cloudy lemonade yellow colored body. Intense nose of lime, coriander, creamed lemons, some crystalline sugar, that salty-lime character found in a good margarita, and tart, full wheat. Creamy, oily texture, thick, full body. Intense and fresh lime juice and coriander in the finish, oily, silky texture, very impressive, very delicious.

GABF 2008: Best beer of the fest hands down. Had at least 20 samples..probably more. POurs a nice palish off-white, nose is tart, and the flavors are tart, wheaty, salty, with a small smidgen of coriander that others thought was more pronounced than i did. This beer was fucking sublime.
