Great schwarz. This poured a deep, dark brown with ruby highlights and was topped by a huge, creamy brown head. It has a rich roasted malt aroma with a bit of smokiness, chocolate, and aniseed. Smooth in the moutrh, the roasted flavors burst through with a bit of dark chocolate sweetness and a touch of hops to balance it out. It finishes on a bitter chocolate note. Very good brew.

500 ml bottle, bought at Pivni Galerie, Prague. Label says Herold Bohemian Black Lager, tmavý speciál, 13 degrees plato, Schwarzbier, ABV 5.2%. Very dark reddish brown colour, nearly black, deep ruby when held to the light. Moderate tan head. Excellent aroma of roasted malts, tar, leather and tobacco. Flavour of roastiness, notes of dark chocolate and liquorice, well balanced with the hops, not particularly sweet. Mouthfeel a bit too thin to deserve a straight "10", still a very good beer. Recommended!

Hmmm...licquorice! Delicious malty aroma and sweet slightly smokey flavour.Incredibly dark, but with a red tinge if you hold it up to the light and a beige head.Really good, nice easy drinking beer.

Poured dark brown with a thick dark brown head. Has a sweet dark fruit aroma with chocolate and roast notes as well. Has a slight flat chocolate taste. An extremely dry finish as well as a good amount of hops in the finish that leave a bitter aftertaste. Had an oily mouth feel that I didn’t appreciate.

Soft, slightly floral, grainy cocoa aroma. At times, I distinctly caught the aroma of Pla Doh. Deep garnet black, khaki, clingy head. Good bottle, cool etched label, high appearance marks. Smoky, tarry coffee and broth flavor. Medium to medium light body. Dry with light grainy sweetness. Toasted finish with lasting mild bitterness. Good, well balanced, but I was it needs more character somhow.

Transmission fluid mixed with oil: Dark, dark, reddish black. Very mild burnt carmel sniff. Taste not very complex, but oh so smooooth. To an Unsophisto-dork like myself, I thought it tasted almost like an English Pub draft beer. Still looking for the nitro-widget thingy in the bottle. Damn, what a finish. All and all, I ended up savoring every last drop of this one and wish I could crack another pint. Sometimes beer is like avant-garde music. Nobody can explain what makes critics wax eloquently over minimalist- ambient drone. This beer is the same way, yet its finish seems to save the day big time. Great lager!!!!!
