Aroma of malt, chocoff, cabernet. Tastes malty, with a solid chocolate element, some hops, and a rauchy finish. This is a complex, very good schwarzbier. hawkshadow (102), Rural Retreat, Virginia, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Feb 15, 2005 Poured beautiful reddish-black color, virtually opaque. Head was small, but with smooth small bubbles, went away quickly, no lacing (on my glass anyway).
Flavor is nice and tight, for lack of a better word. I say tight because somewhat burnt coffee taste is just the right potency that changes to a nice smooth aftertaste.
Overall very nice, I would try it again. kook (2034), Perth, Western Australia, Australia

Malty aroma with a hint of coffee. Flavour is similar, simple dark malts well balanced with a clean finish. Nice stuff! richlikebeer (832), Easton, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 5/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Feb 10, 2005 Bottle at Andy’s, poured black. solid black. Thin tan head and the smell of caramel came on stong. Very full flavor, mainly of malts, coffee and caramel. Gave the flavor and complexity of a much heavier beer, but had the medium body that gives it great drinkability. Lou18 (1353), West Paterson, New Jersey, USA

| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Feb 8, 2005 Without backlighting, this beer appears ebony and nearly opaque, but held to a lamp, it is revealed to be dark ruby in color. This ale poured a long-lasting, largish tan head and left some decent lacing. The aroma is caramel malt with a hint of smoke and faint hops. As suggested by the aroma, a sherry-like mild malt sweetness shines through in the palate entry, and then reveals molasses, chocolate and light smokiness. There is a nice hop balance in the finish with a tangy light bitterness. Overall, an excellent ale reminiscent of a porter. I sampled the 0.5l bottle.
