| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Feb 22, 2009 Bottle, Tesco, Carlisle. An old favourite and I know why. Beautifully black, with a hint of red when held to the light. Pours thickly with a lovely caramel brown head. There’s a bit of smokiness in there, some ripe fruit and the hoppiness that gives a refreshing taste that you don’t always get with dark beer of this kind of strength. The Czech’s invariably get it right with their beer and this is definitely up there with the best. Rodders (127), Norwich, Norfolk, England

Smelt of roasted malts with chocolate. Taste of rich sweet chocolate with a bitter after taste and more maltiness. Smokeyness also evident. Really good actually, first ’black lager’ and tasted like a bit like a ’clean’ porter really, interesting. spydog (74), Tempe, USA

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Feb 13, 2009 Very dark ruby, almost black beer with acreamy, medium-sized beige head. The aroma has sweetish malts, medium roastedness, dark chocolate and quite delicate hoppiness in the finish. The flavor is malty, slightly caramelly, bready and sweetish. The finish is quite dry, bitterish and it has nice roastedness and coffee. Medium bodied palate is slightly carbonated, slippery and bitter in the finish. Long and well roasted "afterburn". Herold Black is a very tasty Schwarz. ChristianScheffel (4689), Odense, Denmark
