Commercial Description:
Brewing: Starts as a light wheat, brewed with 60% wheat malt and 40% local golden malt and Bavarian yeast, then lagered up to 6 weeks for smoothness. Double decoction brew, primary fermentation in open vats for 8 days at step-controlled temperature; secondary fermentation is cold in lager tanks, where it is combined with Bohemian black lager (which has been filtered to reduce yeasts, reviving the fermentation). This adds the chocolate color, enriched body, and complex taste highlights of smoke, coffee, and a touch of caramel. Malt: These malts were made for Herold, and are generally not used in the Czech Republic - specially-malted wheat from Moravia, local barley from Breznice, and dark specialties malted at Tabor and Brno. Hops: Saaz from Zatec and Bor. Original Gravity: 12.8 Plato Alcohol Volume: 5.3% ABV

Deep, dark, sweet, and nutty. I’m not crazy about this beer, but maybe it’s just that I wasn’t in the mood for this style when I opened it.

Pours a three finger light tan head that fades quickly to a ring leaving a little lace. Dark cloudy amber color. Light carbonation and light bodied. Caramel nose. Starts balanced but then a caramel flavor that stays to a clean finish. A tasty wheat. $2.49 for a 500ml bottle from John’s Grocery Iowa City, Ia.

(Bottle) Pours a dark brown body with a spare off-white head. Aroma of cookie, caramel, and chocolate. Flavor of toasted malt and a bit of caramel; somewhat flat carbonation with a chalky finish.

Light aroma slightly dusty. Looks like the average dunkel. Light tan head. Opaque dark umber color. Flavor is good but not outstanding. Smooth but a little weak. A bit more watery than I would have expected. Bitter on the duration. Body is a little thin.

Bottle (no date, though most likely a 2005) consumed on 7/3/06.
Small light-tan head is poorly retained, providing no lacing. Head fades to cover/partial-cover. Body is a deep black-brown, with some deep mahogany tints. Sediment remains on bottom, but the beer shows a low clarity.
Strong chocolate graham crackers in the nose, with sweet, rich honey and milk chocolate. Not much lager yeast here, no mention of crispness. A touch of smokiness (phenols) and dry buttered bread, but most of the character is drowned out in heavy malt sugars.
Some very light clove phenols provide some light dryness, that bites at the palate, but are fully washed away in a sea of caramel malt sugars. I don’t know if something went wrong with the carbonation in this bottle, but it’s shockingly low, leading to a thick, syrupy, cloying palate that runs anywhere from chocolate, to honey, to caramel. Even without much carbonation , this still seems HIGHLY underattenuated. Hop notes are certainly nowhere to be found in this sugary concoction. They weren’t kidding about the double decoction, I guess. Hopefully I just got a severely undercarbonated bottle (still questionable about the attenuation). Will certainly try it again as soon as possible.
This bottle was kept in my refrigerator since purchase.

Very dark brown body with a light tan colored head. The The aroma is rich with milk chocolate, toffee and some coffee. This is very inviting. The taste is a little more muted. Some notes of old caramel candy with day old coffee. There is also some light chocolate. A smooth light body makes this a good session brew. More coffee and roast than I am used to in this style.
