Commercial Description:
Brewing: Starts as a light wheat, brewed with 60% wheat malt and 40% local golden malt and Bavarian yeast, then lagered up to 6 weeks for smoothness. Double decoction brew, primary fermentation in open vats for 8 days at step-controlled temperature; secondary fermentation is cold in lager tanks, where it is combined with Bohemian black lager (which has been filtered to reduce yeasts, reviving the fermentation). This adds the chocolate color, enriched body, and complex taste highlights of smoke, coffee, and a touch of caramel. Malt: These malts were made for Herold, and are generally not used in the Czech Republic - specially-malted wheat from Moravia, local barley from Breznice, and dark specialties malted at Tabor and Brno. Hops: Saaz from Zatec and Bor. Original Gravity: 12.8 Plato Alcohol Volume: 5.3% ABV

Interesting beer, fascinating to read how they concocted this thing. Brown with some ruby highlights, nice creamy smooth head. Aroma of wheat, clove, and faint coffee and caramel. Smooth mouthfeel, pefectly balanced flavors match the nose, with a slight refreshing hint of a sour tang that seems to be a melding of roasted malts and yeast. Really good stuff. What a brewer.

Quite the interesting beer here. Not only interesting but very tasty too! Smokey/petey notes (very slight) in the nose along with sweetness. Appearance was very nice with a dark brown/reddish color to it. Mouthfeel was very light bodied for a dark beer. Flavors were excellent with a creaminess that was satisfying. Not sure when I will see this one come around again, but I’m glad I had it.

A sturdy, sweet malty nose rises from this dark brown brew. The head is two-fingered, tops, and light brown in color. I don’t find this to be the complex drink that the commercial description describes, but I do find it to be enjoyable. The flavor is sweet barley malts with the wheat in a submissive role. Add to that brown sugar, some dark dried fruits, and a dab of chocolate. Doesn’t seem quite like a dunkelweizen, but it’s definitely a sessionable whatever-it-is.

Strong malty, sweet, brown sugar aroma; unrefined. Dark brown with only hints of red. Large tan head that to some degree is lasting. Not much lace. There are some holes in this brew. Superficially is alright. I accidentally selected one of the warm beers I just picked up a the liquor store out of my fridge. Really not a dunkelweiss at all in taste or aroma. No wheat, no banana. Definitely served too warm. Ok, and you have to give it some points for being one of the few dark Czech beers, but this brew is just too unrefined and lacking in character.

Bottled. Rich caramel color with an ivory colored head. Slight wheat aroma. Light mouth-feel. Slightly sweet with an almost overwhelming smoky finish.

Bottle. Pours a dark brown (with a reddish hue) with a large tan head. Sour malty aroma. Nice malty flavor- slightly sweet, slight chocolate-caramel, with a slightly metallic finish.

Magnificent. Resplendent. A treat for the senses. Rich and dark wheat beer with a slight hint of smoke or peat. Lovely stuff, but the straight HefeWeizen’s even better.
