Commercial Description:
Brewing: Starts as a light wheat, brewed with 60% wheat malt and 40% local golden malt and Bavarian yeast, then lagered up to 6 weeks for smoothness. Double decoction brew, primary fermentation in open vats for 8 days at step-controlled temperature; secondary fermentation is cold in lager tanks, where it is combined with Bohemian black lager (which has been filtered to reduce yeasts, reviving the fermentation). This adds the chocolate color, enriched body, and complex taste highlights of smoke, coffee, and a touch of caramel. Malt: These malts were made for Herold, and are generally not used in the Czech Republic - specially-malted wheat from Moravia, local barley from Breznice, and dark specialties malted at Tabor and Brno. Hops: Saaz from Zatec and Bor. Original Gravity: 12.8 Plato Alcohol Volume: 5.3% ABV

Aroma is malty, with a hint of peaty smoke, cloudy brown, tiny tan head. Taste is mild candied malt. Light bodied, sweet and dry. Nice one. Thank You Radek.

Deep cloudy brown color with a medium tan head. Dark malts, some wheat and some banana, like their hefeweizen with a touch of cardboard. Medium bodied and pretty drinkable. Pretty nice but not overly exciting.

Wheat, rusty brown appearance, large rocky head. Light chocolate, gentle malt aroma. Light grassy hop nose. Weak roast Flavour, dark rye, bready. A bit mineral hops at finish. Soft chocolate character all around.

Sample at DougShoemaker’s 2005 December gathering - bottle courtesy of Radek. Dark ruby-brown with a moderate head. The aroma was nice - some yeast, malt & chocolate notes - but also seemed stale. Flavour is also stale, and quite mild - there are definately some nice flavours in there, but they’re hard to find. OK, but it could be so much better.

Bottle at Doug’s Christmas 05. Dark hazy brown, small white head. Very mild aroma - hints of wheat and chocolate, but way too mild. Nice and light on the tongue, there is a pleasant if not bland dunkel like taste. Too thin and bland to be considered anything more than average.

Bottle at ’December at DougShoemaker’s 2005’ -- courtesy of Radek. Pours a cloudy dark brown with ruby hues and with a nice size off-white head. The aroma was frustrating as there was very little of it -- somewhere in there is a nice aroma of wheat, chocolate, fruit, caramel and malt. The flavour suffered from the same problem, it’s just too darn mild. I tasted some wheat, spices, roasted malt and caramel, but barely. I can imagine how good this beer could be if it weren’t so afraid to have an aroma and taste, as it is it’s quite dissapointing.

Opaque black, with a beautiful head. Licorice, chocolate, and spicey wheat, wheaty aroma. Good lager, smooth, nicely malted, medium mouthfeel. Sour finish. Strong carbonation, perhaps the mix of hops. Shared with Radek, his find on one of the on-line beer stores.
