The bottle looks good, except the barcode on the front-label. Starts sweet and quite alcoholic. Also spicy and woody notes, the finish becomes more and more dry and moldy. Not as sweet as the beginning. Had better ones!

11/15/2007: Kapittel Watou Abt has a deep golden color with lots of sediment in it (otherwise it would probably only be hazy). The large, pillow of foamy head is light ivory in color, audible, and hold s for awhile. The aroma is fruity and malty with some alcohol. The flavor is light and malty at first then more fruit, esters, spice, and alcohol start to come through. This beer has a naturally sweet fruit (peach and apricot) quality about it as well as some candi sugar sweetness and banana bread complexity. It has a medium body and feels mellow in the mouth. This beer is quite good overall.

330 ml/11.2 fl. oz. bottle (Alc 10% by Vol / Best Before: B 02 09) shared by Rob. Thanks! Rating #296 for this beer.

750 ml bottle. Huge fruit aroma, with pineapple, strawberry, plum; plus honey and something spicy. Flavor is big, sweet and fruity, with plums, pineapple, and berries, plus honey and citrus hops. Finish is very bitter, almost astringent, but that is welcome, cutting through the sweet fruit and lasting a long time. Color is a rather muddy golden honey brown, very dark for a tripel. Pours with a big head that goes quickly to lace. Very cloudy. Medium-weight, frothy mouth, but leaves a rather crisp finish for its size. Alcohol is also well hidden. Excellent.

Cellared 75cl at Beer Hunter’s, BBE August 1999. Hazy and flakey amber, small pale head. Old pear on the nose, lotsa cellar and old honey. Flavor starts sweet, even liqueur-like with little menthol spices, some cellar, strongly bready finish, some alcohol warmth. Kinda stuffy, the ageing isn’t too classy. Medium bodied, still strong foaming carbonation. Those 15 years really show here, and not all for the better. Pretty interesting though.

Source:330 mL bottle from Frugal MacDoogal’s in Nashville.
Glass:Orval Trappist glass.
Appearance:Hazy yellow/gold pour with a thin white head.
Aroma:Sweet malt, yeast, apricots, apples and a hint of alcohol.
Flavor:Dark fruits and yeast with a warming alcohol finish.
Palate:Full body with soft carbonation.
Overall:The aroma and flavor are not indicative of each other. Didn’t like the flavor at all.
