Small head, little lace, nose is mostly sweet and malty with a little hop kick. The flavor is sweet and estery with a nice dark backing that almost hits you by surprise. Pretty solid. | 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jun 28, 2009 330ml bottle into tuliip glass at Den Dyver restaurant in Bruges. This was ideally matched with a selection of cheeses on the set menu. It pours a hazy dark brown with an ample beige head. Roasted malty caramel aromas are dominant with similar flavours on the tongue without being too sweet or cloying. The finish is bittersweet with a nice spicy hop presence. Once again I marvel at the restrained sweetness that seems to characterise the best Belgian ales I have tasted so far. No complaints here. MagnumPI (56), Essex, England

Not a bad beer at all. Distinctly good colour and aroma, and quite a malty number which began with a wholesome promise and sadly just didnt hold its own to the end. It was pretty hoppy and was quite akin to an English bitter eventually Palidor19 (1780), Brandon, Florida, USA

| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 2/5 | 14/20 | Apr 4, 2009 The aroma is sweet and grassy with dust, caramel, and lightly fruity. The appearance is amber brown with a foamy head. The flavor is like the aroma with a good hop bitterness to balance the caramel malt. The palate is thin but OK. The finish is a touch metallic. Overall I like it. FatPhil (3477), Espoo, Finland

Deep red, healthy head. Sweet malty and grainy aroma. Pleasant carbonation. Very sweet in the mouth, but bitterness lreminds me of an artificial sweetener such as saccharine. Very brown (earthy - bio - that kind of feel) grainy taste. Almost sacchariny hoppy finish. Warming (but not alcoholic). Hard to pinpoint why, but this is simply delicious! I suspect this would age very well (BB2011, so had quite young, and indeed Austone confirms that it does age well).
