CapFlu (3342), Victoria, British Columbia, Canada Dec 25, 2007 (Draught) Sampled at Dix X-mas Xtreme Caskival 2007. Pours plain flat appearance. Nose is very malty with an oily elixir texture. Very fresh fig and strong green fruit flavour. Oily texture with nice pine hops. Sham (1846), Seattle, Washington, USA Dec 18, 2007 Looks like it’s lacking carbonation. Colored mahogany. Lots of piney hops as well as citrus and a touch of flowers. Caramel and raisins as well. Alcohol and bitterness hits at the end. There is a bit of a tea or soda flavor that floats about. Beershine (1473), Miami Beach, Florida, USA Dec 17, 2007 Sampled at Caskival 2007. Pours opaque dark woodsy color quite flat with no head. Thin sweet malty nose. Flavors are sweet but relatively clean and does not become cloying, smooth but thin and simple. tiggmtl (4178), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Jan 20, 2007 Biscuity malts and strong citrus hops in the somewhat sharp and grassy aroma. Undertone of alcohol is also apparent. Clear, chestnut brown coloured body is topped by a low off white head that recedes to partial cover and ring with some spotty lacing. Strong earthy and citrus hops flavour join a touch of roast and nice chewy, nutty, biscuity malts. Very sweet, occasionally borders on cloying but roast lingers in the aftertaste. Some alcohol especially at the finish. Medium body is quite dry but not astringent. Fair carbonation could perhaps be a bit stronger so that it feels less sticky. Sweetness increases if allowed to sit for any length of time. Sampled at the Dix Winter Beer Festival 2006/2007. mgermani (637), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Jan 8, 2007 Poured a reddish brown, faint head with minimal lace. Aroma of tart berries. This one puts the barley back into barleywine! Amber malting, good hops, peppery alcohol. Creamy mouthfeel, thick, aftertaste vaguely syrupy. Nice barleywine - not as astringent as Fat Cat, but then not as roasty as Phillips Burley. Moderately enjoyable.
