Commercial Description:
Released Sept 21, 2008 (the day after brewgrass). The next brew in our renowned imperial line, this hearty stout is rich with coffee and chocolate notes, all achieved solely through the use of special roasted barley grains. The complex malt character blends the velvety sweetness of specialty grains with the creaminess of a classic stout. No flavoring has been added to this product.

Bomber courtesy of JCB. Pours a near pitch black with a one finger tan head and spotty lacing. Nose is roasty malt, milk chocolate and coffee. Taste is powered cocoa upfront with baker’s chocolate and espresso finishing it out. Mild bitter hop finish comes in at the end and lingers for awhile. Full, creamy mouth feel. Good stout – thanks Jason!

2008 Bottle thanks to mar. Pours with a light brown head that fades and a black body. Aroma of chocolate, mocha and lots of alcohol. Taste is mocha, and some dark roast. Slightly fizzier than I would like, but a creamy mouthfeel. Would age well.

22oz from Sam’s, Durham. It’s a very fine pour, with a head that comes on a bit late with a quick fizz and then it’s gone. The nose, however, is a bit off-putting. It’s got a slightly grainy, vegetal quality, strangely enough, with – honestly – slightly less roasted awesomeness than the regular offering. Sure, there are plenty of big choc notes in the nose and, to a lesse degree, in the taste. But the fruity qualities seem somehow to get in the way. And the body needs to be a bit more substantial to me.

Bottle. Black color, thin broken dark tan head. Aroma is a mix of dark roast, malts, alcohol, mild coffee. Nice palate, not overly thick, very drinkable. Taste is very nice, with sweetness and roast in equal measures to start, some coffee and a slight alcohol burn on the back end. Very drinkable, no obvious issues.

Pours dark, dark brown out of the bottle and settles in as an impenetrable black with a one finger tan head. The head recedes to a collar quickly and leaves decent lacing. The aroma is pretty subdued with lots of dark roasted malts and lots of sweet dark fruits and licorice. Hints of chocolate and coffee seem to be present as well. The taste is a slightly bigger version of the aroma with semi-sweet chocolate and dark fruits up front before giving way to roasted malts. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with good carbonation and very smooth. This is a good offering from Highland though nothing groundbreaking. Enjoyable.
