Opaque black-brown with small tan head. Smooth asphalty aroma is welcoming. Bottle has more chocolate apparent. Nice sweetness, nice mellow asphalt body. The oatmeal shines through, is really nice. A bit of caramel and toast. Some charred sugar and a bit of light treacle. Flavour is a bit strange though. Lightly plasticy and sweet with a strange slickness that I’m not really a fan of. Sort of orangey. It tastes like they added patent malt to a scottish ale recipe. joe1510 (501), Illinois, USA

Received this as an extra in a recent trade with beavers, thanks again Mike! Highland Oatmeal Porter pours black with mahogany highlights. When backlit the whole body takes on a deep mahogany color and glows ruby with the light directly behind the body. A standard pour brought about a two finger khaki head that, as it slowly fell, became incredibly creamy and left some nice patch work lacing.
I swirl the glass before I take my first good whiff and am surprised to find a decent amount of cocoa and peanut butter hidden down below. Deeper pulls give me a solid roasted maltiness that takes hold and won’t let go. A touch of slightly green berries and a citric hoppiness come through on the back.
The flavor follows the aroma stride for stride. A rich roastiness starts things off and leads the way through. The roastiness is met up by cocoa, green berries, freshly ground coffee, and a citric hoppiness that ends up being fairly assertive on the finish. I really enjoy a porter, or stout for that matter, that has a nice hoppy presence on the finish. Highlands Oatmeal Porter does not disappoint.
The oatmeal adds a nice creaminess without being too filling. The body is medium and the carbonation pushes this beer through fairly quickly. A combination of the citric hoppiness, roasty bitterness, and healthy carbonation keep the tongue awake.
I could see myself easily drinking a few of these in a sitting. This is a highly drinkable and enjoyable porter. The lower abv, creamy but quick moving mouthfeel, and good flavor keep this beer flowing easily.
Oatmeal Porter is another good beer from Highland. I’ve become very impressed with this brewery and the more I sample from them the more I like. Thanks again for the sample Mike!

| 2.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 3/5 | 3/10 | 2/5 | 10/20 | Jan 17, 2009 This smelled like a homebrew gone wrong. Aroma of liquid malt extract that wasn’t completely fermented. Tastes like bread and cardboard. Just not enjoyable at all. I couldn’t make it through the first quarter of the glass. Possibly a bad bottle. maniac (2628), Richmond, Virginia, USA

Oatmeal sugar aroma has light floral yeast and some stinky brewery floor yeast. Dark black red body with a medium-lasting creamy light tan head. Mild woody yeast and toasted grains flavour has an overall burntness to it. Full body, but not thick. Nice balance, drinkable, initially weird aroma but not bad.

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jan 10, 2009 Bottle from Secret Santa, thanks! Pours deep brown/amberhue with a tan film of head. Interesting aroma- chocolaty, milky, some nutty nuances and a smoky hint. Inviting. Light fluffy feel. Flavor begins with a light peppery note which gives way to light chocolaty notes, a meaty character with a touch of smokiness. Finish is lightly roasted with more nutty notes. A bit against the grain, and a tad thin, but I enjoyed this unique Porter.
