| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Mar 3, 2007 Pours brown with a very thin head. Smells of spices, some dark fruit, dough and yeasty. Tastes of spice, dark fruit and some malt. The palate is too thick and creamy and the beer lacks depth. HighGravity (890), Baltimore, Maryland, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Feb 25, 2007 (Brewed and Bottled in Asheville, NC) Dark brown almost black in color. The nose is fairly light, but it does offer up some malt and spice. The palate is very full, malty, and appropriately sweet. Hops are in the background playing a muted role in this malt dominated ale. Scotch Ales are a style that I don’t have a whole lot of experience with, but sometimes I find too many interpretations overly sweet. I am glad this beer is not a sugar bomb. Very nice on a snowy night. radiomgb (2048), Peterborough, Ontario, Canada
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Feb 23, 2007 Deep mahogany, thing quickly dissipating tan coloured head, very small patchy lacing. The aroma is quite malty, lot of caramel sweetness, earthy with some dark fruits. The flavour is thick and chewy, very rich with some light alcohol, lots of malt (earthy, caramel, some chocolate). Chalky mouthfeel, medium/large body, medium carbonation. Finishes with a bit of alcohol warmth, moderatly bitter, lingery. Not bad but its lacking something...

| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Feb 12, 2007 Bottle from Ross and served in my Unibroue tulip: Pours a deep reddish brown and nearly opaque with a tan frothy head and good lace. The nose detects notes of smoked maple wood, leather, non-aromatic pipe tobacco, heavy roasted malt, hint of bittersweet chocolate, some earthy yeast esters, and a dash of prune esters. The taste starts with a punch of smoky peaty malt, a uppercut of fruity character and a sucker punch of mocha. A quick jab of noble bitterness sets the palate for the next drink. The mouth feel is oh so smooth for the style, lush and very drinkable. A beautifully balanced and wonderful winter warmer this brew is.
Right now I wish I had five or ten bottles of this brew. Shiz...it is North Carolina for peat sake...what the hell do they know about winter warmers...well I guess more than enough! GET YA SOME!!! Glouglouburp (2865), Montreal, Quebec, Canada
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Jan 18, 2007 Updated: May 7, 2007Dark duby body with a small off-white head. Strong caramel aroma. A whole lot of malts. Very sweet beer with assertive sticky caramel dominating the flavour spectrum. Behind the caramel are some nutty flavours that combined with the buttery mouthfeel made for a not-so-great peanut butter flavour. Finish was weird, no description, just weird. Why is this ordinary scotch ale so highly rated on ratebeer is as much a mystery to me as why kamikaze pilots wore helmets.
