It is hard to find a better, true-to-style central European dunkel in the midwest. Brown with a red hue. Low carbonation, but a short lived, brown head. Aroma has malt and read meat. Lots of malt in the flavor, with fresh bread and lager yeast. Very smooth, and a good, sweet finish.

Bottle thanks to bu11zeye. The smell is malts, sweet, coffee, and fruits. The look is clear, brownish, with a beige colored head. The taste is a little roasty, malts, and coffee.

Pours ruby colored with a mostly receding tan head. Notes of toffee, dark bread, toasted malt, nuts, and caramelized wort. Full bodied with smooth carbonation. A very tasty dunkel.

( 500ml bottled 03/2008 thanks to bu11zeye) Pours light brown with some bubbles and good lacing. Nose of corn, light chocolate. Semi-sweet chocolate also in the taste. Well carbonated and a light linger that is slightly off.

Draft, Bavarian Lodge. I had to squeeze in just one more before closing to wash out the unpleasant chile mead in my previous rating. A deep reddish brown color in the glass, with a light lacy head. Smell brings in darker malts, more familiar to a schwarzbier. A hearty, grainy dunkel taste. At the same time, reminds me of my very first dark beers (Schlitz Dark, way back in 1977). But it has the bones of a well-made doppelbock, too. A fine beer to finish off a night at a German stube.

( 16.9oz, bottled 03.2008 ) Pours a clear brown body with a spare off-white head. Aroma of caramel, raisins, subtle roastiness, and old books. Flavor of raisins, vinous, caramel, earth, and light molasses.
