Commercial Description:
Caramel, roasted, black and chocolate malts provide an explosion of coffee like flavors. The strong espresso character comes from the addition of espresso beans to the boil. Notes of vanilla, dark fruit , cocao and chocolate. The very unusual character of Hitachino Nest Espresso Stout stems from the fact that Kiuchi Brewery is using the recipe of a Russian Imperial Stout as base. Pitch black color, big brown head. Aromas of chocolate, roasted bitterness, black currants, dark fruits.

Bottle: Poured the expected black color with a thin tan top. The big aroma isn’t much different than the filter bowl in the nasty ol’ coffee pot in my office ... thick and dirty with burnt coffee bean essence. The flavor isn’t much different ... this is a cold cup of your daddy’s coffee from the neighborhood diner ... thick with flavor, enough that you’re rolling your tongue around in your mouth, convinced you’ll find some unground beans in there. Yummy yummy in my tummy. (#3172, 11/4/2007)

This is strange. The aroma is slightly toffee, dirty socks, cocoa, and strange. Taste is very similar, but more unsweetened cocoa. I feel lines of cocoa! I am a cocoa head (lame!). Finish is slightly smooth with a diminishing harshness. Very decent and different.

Strong chocolate aroma with hints of coffee. Black in color with a quickly diminishing brown head. Very smooth chocolate bitterness throughout strengthening and developing some coffee character in bitterness in the finish. Super creamy palate.

Bottle from State Line. Jet black pour with 1-finger dark brown head; definitely one of the darkest brown heads I’ve ever seen. Complex aroma of heavy coffee, dark chocolate, jalapeno oils...very much like the aroma of Bell’s Java. The taste is roasty chocolate malt, coffee, dark chocolate, and jalapeno oil. Dense, very complex palate that is dominated by coffee, but has wonderful chocolatey notes throughout. This one is outstanding.

Bottle courtesy of slob. Pours dark brown with a thin off white head. Smells of lots of upfront coffee, some hints of molasses but not much else. Tastes of bitter coffee. Pretty one dimensional.

Pours thick as oil, leaving a little head. It looks rich, dark, and slightly intimidating. The smell tells me differently. It is rich, malty, and almost overpoweringly coffee. The taste is about the same, full bodied, with an added touch of chocolate that lingers for a good while on the back of my throat. It is a great beer for a cold evening.

POurs black, with a very small light brown head. Smells of monster fresh coffee grounds, chocolate, and nutty malts. Very inviting smelling. Liked it. Full-bodied, the flavor was coffee of course, but more toned down and balanced in the flavor. i was expecting a coffee attack from the way it smelled. There was some creamy dark chocolate hat seemed to give it some complexity and balance. The finish was creamy and mostly chocolate roast, with the coffee too. Really no signs of bitterness which was good for this beer. i dug this one from these guys.
