I’m going to go way against the grain here, but this is a darn good beer. All of this flavor and body and roasty goodness 3.8%? You’ve got to be kidding me. This thing is a new session favorite. If I ever have to quit drinking, one of these with dinner every night is going to be my backup plan.
Pours dark w/ a modest head, nice roasty, nutty aroma. Gently sour in front, mildly sweet throughout, roasty. Vinous tones, soft blueberries. Nutty, mild smoke on the finish. Lots going on here. Soft in the mouth, lovely to sip but hard not to do so quickly. It comes into its own as it warms toward cellar temperature.
Splendid. Nihon (240), Vernon, Connecticut, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Dec 2, 2007 Dark pour, low carbonation. Sweet, caramel, roasted aroma. Just a little sweetness in the flavor, light/medium bodied. Tastes like a normal stout, with almost a roasted coffee flavor, and then with a little cream poured in. Well balanced to my palette. | 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Aug 12, 2003 Pours with a very fizzy and short lived brown head atop a dark ruby red, almost black color, very dense and cloudy. Aroma is great! Very malty and sweet, red-wine like, with dark fruit notes (plums, dates, and cherries), and a roasted malt chocolateness in the finish. Taste is nice, though not quite as good a aroma. Flavor is sweet and malty throughout (a little too sweet for me), with a red wine-like mid section, and a slightly bitter, moist earthy finish. It's over carbonated in my opinion, and could use a thicker palate. Overall a good brew, althgough it doesn't seem like much of a stout to me (more like a wannabe 3rd coast old ale barleywine). dwyerpg (2537), Las Vegas, Nevada, USA

Good though. Has the same ricy/sake flavoring of the red rice ale, but much less, so it is more drinkable. It’s just too sweet to drink much of. NYHarvey (2154), New York, New York, USA

The aroma has freaking mild bourbon/oak/pineapple notes. I am almost sure this isn’t oak/bourbon aged...but I smell what I smell. The body is a ruddy dark brown with a diminishing tan head. The fore is mild pineapple, chocolate, cocoa. This so tastes oake aged, but didn’t before. Mouthfeel is thin, but this time around I am loving this beer!

Whoa...very over carbonated. First pull put a hands breadth of head into my glass. Takes forever to pour cause the head just explodes anytime I add beer. Aroma is of sweet under-carbonated cola with a bit of roasted malt and wood smoke. Color is black, but fades toward dark brown at the bottom of the glass. Very light body...almost lager thin. Some roastiness in the flavor and mild sweetness...much less than I expected. More woodsmoke and roastiness int he finish. Unusual brew.
