Sammy (3187), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Aug 3, 2008 Orange colour and bubbly head, floral aromas. A different culture and a different measure of what bitterness is. A definite woodiness, without too much of supporting flavours other than alcohol and a bitterness from the ale itself. I do not believe it was greatly drinkable, by different standards it is a successful ageing/barreling.
steview (807), Oceanside, California, USA Nov 21, 2008 it’s a gusher! and like a boozy Orval: hazy yellow-orange-brown body with similar highlight--only brighter; general qualities--light vinegar, light acidity, light alcohol, light sweetness, medium bitterness, medium sourness; flavors or aromas noted--wood, rice, orange, cherry, alcohol; good brew. DrBayern (1000), Morehead City, North Carolina, USA Nov 21, 2008 Bottle marked X.7.10.2. This was a gusher, foaming out of the bottle immediately after the cap was removed. The bottle had not been agitated at all, so this was not a good sign. Needless to say, the white head over the cloudy pinkish orange pour was huge, foamy, and collapsed quickly. Aroma was funky, sour with some woody fragrances, leather, and a distinctly sour character. I don’t know what a sake cask smells like, but this reminded me of Brett. Medium body, tart and acidic, leaving the palate clean. There was some fruitiness in the flavor, and the sourness and bitterness was aggressive and came on quickly. I can’t help but think that this was infected. I’m not anxious to try another, but I probably will, as I cannot imagine that that this is what it is supposed to be. tgncc (325), Bellmore, New York, USA Nov 20, 2008 Interesting and different type of beer. The appearance is an attractive color of orange, hazy, with a strong off-white head. The aroma is very unique; I sense something akin to a sour ale, but I get unmistakable sake, and oak. The flavor is of rice, sake - a little sour. The wood comes through in this as well. The mouthfeel is a little thick and oily. The finish is a bit sour, with a mild hop bite, fairly clean finish. This is a unique and enjoyable beer. I wouldn’t make it a staple, but I enjoyed trying it.
marcus (1095), Sacramento, California, USA Nov 18, 2008 This copper ale poured with a thin beige head and a sour aroma. There is an intense caramel malt base with an equally intense hop bitterness, and a slightly sour finish that tastes likes sake. ARMed (436), Garnet Valley, Pennsylvania, USA Nov 1, 2008 This one is way too poweful for my tastes. It has a very sour and tart finish that almost makes this beer undrinkable. I never has sake before, but after tasting this beer it will not be on the top of my list.
