austinpowers (2818), New York, New York, USA May 7, 2008 Can from LCBO Queen’s Quay (which is not a quay, incidentally). I love dunkels and brown ales, and this is a somewhat bitter, non-nutty brown ale that’s not malty enough. Could be thicker, and sweeter.
DuffMan (1831), Calgary (back from 1yr in AUS), Alberta, Canada Jul 2, 2008 Dark brown, clear, moderate head. Toasty, slightly burnt malt aroma. Flavours of darkly roasted malts, chocolate. Comes across as more of a schwarz style. azlondon (454), Greater London, England Jul 1, 2008 Appearance: Very dark redish brown. Little head.
Aroma: Dark fruit. Roasted. Metallic.
Taste: Roasted, burnt. Dark fruit. Malty. Slightly metallic.

Wouldn’t have guessed when I tasted this during a Ratebeer site crash. Reddish brown pour with a medium frothy head. Grainy roasted malt aroma with hints of chocolate and coffee. Taste is very strong coffee with some grainy notes. A little thin but very pleasant. cyrenaica (252), Milton, Ontario, Canada Jun 7, 2008 473ml can

I tried this beer on June 7, 2008 after purchasing from one of my local LCBO outlets. The beer poured a very dark translucent brown, with some reddish hints. The head was tan coloured, and lasted. The aroma was roasted malt, chocolate, and toffee. The mouthfeel was medium bodied, creamy, with a sour hint. The flavour was roasted malt, dry cocoa, and a little bit of sourness and bitterness covering the tongue. 4421 (6), Canada does not count May 18, 2008 Updated: May 23, 2008This was a 500mL can. The Hockley Valley Dark is indeed quite dark, with a cola like appearance, though proved to be deep red when held up to light. It had a fine, creamy head that lasted. Not much of an aroma, and what I did catch were nuts and caramel. Hoppy taste with little malt. Medium bodied with an overall easy feel. Overall an okay local option.
