Commercial Description:
Dark beer existed in Bavaria long before light beer. This was the first type of beer to be brewed at Hofbräuhaus when it was founded. Today, when beer-lovers all over the world talk about dark beer, they usually mean a Munich style beer. Today, Hofbräu Dunkel - the archetypal Bavarian beer - is still as popular as ever. With its alcoholic content of around 5.5% volume and its spicy taste, it’s a refreshing beer that suits all kinds of occasion. A beer in the traditional Munich style!

Draught. Reddish brown, small off-white head. Berry sourish aroma, little rust and roasted malts. Same sourish berries in the flavor, roasted malts, sweet rye-pudding, little hops. Light to medium bodied, average carbonation. The berries are a bit off in this one.

Brown. White head that didn’t last. Slight aroma of malt and grain. Tastes slightly malty, slight caramel and biscuit. Light bitterness comes through at the end. Its pretty clean and easy drinking.

Clear ruby color, creamy off-white head. Rye bread, toasted sugar and grassy hops in the nose. Grassy hoppy slightly caramelly dunkel. Light sour note. Standard dunkel, a bit souless.

(7/4/08) Draught at the brewpub in Munich. Served in a 1L mug. Dark brown with a medium beige head. Aroma of toasted malt, some bread and caramel. Sweet flavor with caramelly malt and light toastiness. Medium-bodied but maybe slightly too light. Acceptable.

Had this at a German restaurant in New Braunfels, TX. It was served in a liter mug. Nice dark color, head, and aroma. Went down smoothly, but the flavor lingered. The beer was much better than the sausages. Would definitely order again.
