Commercial Description:
Dark beer existed in Bavaria long before light beer. This was the first type of beer to be brewed at Hofbräuhaus when it was founded. Today, when beer-lovers all over the world talk about dark beer, they usually mean a Munich style beer. Today, Hofbräu Dunkel - the archetypal Bavarian beer - is still as popular as ever. With its alcoholic content of around 5.5% volume and its spicy taste, it’s a refreshing beer that suits all kinds of occasion. A beer in the traditional Munich style!

On tap at the Hofbräuhaus. A dark brown colour with a good head. Aroma is sweet and malty. Taste is also malty with some sweetness. Fairly unimpressive.

Single from Total Wine, Jacksonville. Clear brown beer with a small white head. Mild dark malt aroma. Flavor is caramel and dark malt, with a crisp hop finish and nice bitter aftertaste. I like dunkels and this one is good. A very pleasant and tasty brew. Not spectacular, but one that I could drink often if available.

Sampled at a tasting... poured very dark, somewhat amber. Aroma kind of smokey caramel. Very light on flavor, but what was there was sweet caramel. Overall pretty smooth. I didn’t give this super high marks anywhere, but it was balanced well and enjoyable. Just not anything really spectacular.

Pours a dark brown color with a slight ruby tint. Also a very large puffy white head. Aroma is malty and sweet. Flavor is full and malty with a little bit of a fruit taste as well. On tap.

This was a pretty good dunkel. It pours dark brown with a slight red tint, and has a small, off-white head. The aroma smells of nuts, sweet malt, and carmel (with some maple?). Goes down very easily. Smooth finish with slightly bitter tones.

On tap at Franz’s Lagerhaus (Palm Harbor, FL). Pours a clear, medium reddish brown with an off white head. Aroma is sweet roasted malt, caramel, butterscotch, and mild spices. Sweet flavor as well but with some bitterness in the finish. Very drinkable.

Really enjoyed this. Extremely creamy with a nice full body but isn’t too heavy. Nice bit of sweetness that plays well with a slight bitter finish. Had this on tap in Philadelphia.

Single 12 oz. bottle from Total Wine in Jacksonville. Pours a light brown color with a thin head. Aroma is a lightly roasted malt. Taste is a richer roasted malt with a bit of caramel and a touch of bitterness. Nice beer.
