Commercial Description:
Dark beer existed in Bavaria long before light beer. This was the first type of beer to be brewed at Hofbräuhaus when it was founded. Today, when beer-lovers all over the world talk about dark beer, they usually mean a Munich style beer. Today, Hofbräu Dunkel - the archetypal Bavarian beer - is still as popular as ever. With its alcoholic content of around 5.5% volume and its spicy taste, it’s a refreshing beer that suits all kinds of occasion. A beer in the traditional Munich style!

Poured from bottle 3/2008. Aroma of malt, caramel, raisin. Mahogany color, rocky tan head. Malt and fruit in the flavor, with brown sugar and bitterness in aftertaste. Slightly oily feel in palate. Flavors blended well at finish. Not bad.

Pours a fairly clear rddish brown, with a big creamy light tan head. Smells more on the fruity side, definite grapes, maybe some apple, and dark sweet malts as well. Fairly thin bodied, tasted of dark fruits and sweet malts thatI got in the nose. Could definitely use some depth here. Very easy drinking dunkel, although nothing special about it at all. Very avergae brew, but wasnt expecting greatness.

On tap at Lagerhaus in Palm Harbor FL. Pours crystal clear brown and brighter amber hues with long lasting tan head and nice cobweb lacing. The aroma is really on the light side with mild Munich type malts with a malt roastiness behind that. The aroma builds to a pleasing level as it warms bringing about some biscuit malts. The taste is mild with hints of sweet caramel and nuttiness along with a bits of grainy malts. There is also some faint noble hoppiness in the background carrying around floral and spice hops bitterness. A caramel and nuttiness linger well into the after taste.

On Tap. Poured a dark brown, with a decent brown head. Aroma of dark mlat and nuts, caramel and a bit of sweet candi sugars. Flavor is very much the same as the aroma, but muted. Finish lasts a long time with nuttiness and sweet malt. Very good drinkable brew.

Sampled from a 12 oz green bottle this beer poured a dark red-brown color with a large tan head. The aroma was sour, funky and a bit skunky. The flavor was moderately sweet, creamy toasted malts with a mildly skunky finish. I believe that this beer was a bit light struck but since the brewer cared so little about the beer as to place it in a green bottle, I will care so little as to not bother to try it again to give it a fair rating.

Draught at the Lagerhaus. Dark brown body, 1 finger brown head. Nose is dark malts, some candy sweetness, a good amount of nutty notes, caramel, some light chocolate and then really more malts. Flavor profile is unchanged from the aroma, but because a little more muted in each regard. Malts and chocolate, followed by some caramel and candy sweetness. A pleasant nuttiness forms of the back end. Light to medium bodied. Finish is lengthy, sweet malts and nuts, blending into chocolate tones. Not bad by any means, and a good representation of the style.

I had this one at the Hofbrauhaus in Las Vegas on 2/17/08. Unfortunately, I didn’t take any notes at the time, but still recall a pleasant maltiness.

Bottle. Head is initially small, frothy, light brown, mostly diminishing. Body is clear medium brown. Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (toasted bread, caramel, husks), lightly hoppy (herbs, flowers). Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. Rough around the edges and a bit too sweet, but not bad.
