Commercial Description:
Dark beer existed in Bavaria long before light beer. This was the first type of beer to be brewed at Hofbräuhaus when it was founded. Today, when beer-lovers all over the world talk about dark beer, they usually mean a Munich style beer. Today, Hofbräu Dunkel - the archetypal Bavarian beer - is still as popular as ever. With its alcoholic content of around 5.5% volume and its spicy taste, it’s a refreshing beer that suits all kinds of occasion. A beer in the traditional Munich style!

Amazing beer served at the Hofbrauhaus. I had never had a Dunkel before so it looked intimidating but the aroma was amazing and as smooth a beer as I’ve tasted.

Pours orange/amber with an off white head. Aroma of faint malt and hops. Flavor is more of the same. Nice balance w/ a quick finish. Nothing amazing but very drinkable.

On draught at Hofbrauhaus in Munich. Dark brown with a big fluffy white head. Aroma is unremarkable, of malt and caramel. Flavor is sweet and malty, and a little toasty. Not overly exciting but very drinkable, but I guess it has to be if they’re going to serve it by the liter.

A brown pour, a little boring, kinda clear. Tastes of cereal grains. Not much going on here. A bit lacking in good taste, with corn, grain taste prevailing.

Sweet carmel malt aroma. Sweet malt flavor with a nice balance of hops. Medium bodied with a lasting finish. Not to heavy for a dunkel. Would definately drink this again.

one liter draft at Hofbrauhaus - Pours very dark brown with a sizable, lingering head. It smells of sweet malt. The flavor is sweet and the mouthfeel smooth and easy going. The hops are just noticeable. It’s medium bodied and is a simple, straightforward beer that makes for a good quaff in the beer hall. Prost!

Sampler at <a href=http://www.ratebeer.com/Place/illinois/frankf Liquors, Frankfort. Surprised this hasn’t been reported in my area lately. Light brown in color. Toasty malt smell. Taste is a bit yeasty again, but there’s some nice roasty malt involved here. Could just be that my sample was from the bottom of the bottle.

Draft in Munchen. Pours out a dark amber/red colour. Aroma was sweet and carried into the flavour with molasses. Not a heavy dunkel. Nice.
