Commercial Description:
Dark beer existed in Bavaria long before light beer. This was the first type of beer to be brewed at Hofbräuhaus when it was founded. Today, when beer-lovers all over the world talk about dark beer, they usually mean a Munich style beer. Today, Hofbräu Dunkel - the archetypal Bavarian beer - is still as popular as ever. With its alcoholic content of around 5.5% volume and its spicy taste, it’s a refreshing beer that suits all kinds of occasion. A beer in the traditional Munich style!

one liter draft at Hofbrauhaus - Pours very dark brown with a sizable, lingering head. It smells of sweet malt. The flavor is sweet and the mouthfeel smooth and easy going. The hops are just noticeable. It’s medium bodied and is a simple, straightforward beer that makes for a good quaff in the beer hall. Prost!

Sampler at <a href=http://www.ratebeer.com/Place/illinois/frankf Liquors, Frankfort. Surprised this hasn’t been reported in my area lately. Light brown in color. Toasty malt smell. Taste is a bit yeasty again, but there’s some nice roasty malt involved here. Could just be that my sample was from the bottom of the bottle.

Draft in Munchen. Pours out a dark amber/red colour. Aroma was sweet and carried into the flavour with molasses. Not a heavy dunkel. Nice.

Draught, Archer Ale House
Bright dark brown. Figs, molasses and brown sugar in the aroma. The body is light, and a bit watery in the finish. Flavours of light molasses, graham crackers and slightly sticky sugariness. Decent balance.

Draught Very stable yellow head, leaving lace, over chestnut-brown beer. Rainwater, dark autumn leaves, and a bit fruity - and of course very malty. Again leafy & malty; sweet, but nowhere exaggeratedly. Coloured malts, without roastedness. Ends a tad woody. Quite well-bodied, slick, near-syrupy. Much better than feared, to be honest.

draft- dunkel-rific. enjoyed this roasty, sweet treat. Very well rounded, nothing overly dramatic about it, and highly drinkable.

Bottle- Sampled @ Siebel during the German style tasting- Clear dark brown color, tan foamy head. Nose is intensely malty, somewhat unpleasent. I think I’m not a fan of munich malts. Flavor is not balanced, too sweet, not enough dark notes for me.
