Commercial Description:
Dark beer existed in Bavaria long before light beer. This was the first type of beer to be brewed at Hofbräuhaus when it was founded. Today, when beer-lovers all over the world talk about dark beer, they usually mean a Munich style beer. Today, Hofbräu Dunkel - the archetypal Bavarian beer - is still as popular as ever. With its alcoholic content of around 5.5% volume and its spicy taste, it’s a refreshing beer that suits all kinds of occasion. A beer in the traditional Munich style!

I always expect a quite a bit from a Dunkel, givent the paucity of choices in this style. I mean - if a brewer is going to brew this style, it MUST be good, right? This offering from HM was just OK. Nice color on pour with a foamy head on it, but the flavor and aroma just weren’t quite spectacular for me. I’d order it again if available, but wouldn’t go out of my way to get it. There are better Dunkels out there. I think that Ayinger and Schafly are tops in the US market.

Rich, "warm", dark/caramel malt aroma. Nice brown color that turns reddish mahogany using halogen. The beige head went up well, but down fast. Medium in body and rather creamy in carbonation. There are medium dark roasted malt tastes, some nuttiness, and arguably a bit of grassy hop. Maybe a chocolate lilt. Just grabs the mouth. The finish is slightly earthy, not all that sweet considering the malt is there, and there is still a light bitter. A pleasant sort of neutral finish. HB does seem to make good beer.

So this is my first rating, but im not new to the world of beers. me and my friend first had this beer at j and r’s steak house on tap and we both loved it. We went to a usual beer distributor and couldnt find it. Today we went to a different one, found it, got so excited we split case of 24. we bought out the stores selection. im rating the beer now as i drink it out of a glass, and honestly, theres a noticable difference between how it was on tap and how it is now. However, it still tastes great and it was a pleasure to have as my first rated beer. now onto the rating, when i first opened the bottle i could smell it, it smelt great and it got me extremely excited. its dark brown, almost looks like a jack and coke. the head disappeared pretty quick. it feels great in the mouth, the taste is great. definately a beer ill buy again, though my fridge will be stocked with it for a month

Looks, smells and tastes pretty much like every other dunkel I’ve tried over the past few days. Brown with orange highlights, thin head with some lacing. Nice aroma of caramel and dough. Extremely nice palate - better than average for a dunkel maybe, candy undertones, stickiness, a bit of hops is nice, get some rich toffee.

draught at hofbrauhaus in munich. pours ruby with white head. nose of sweet wet grains, slightly toffee and chocolate. flavor is crisp and clean with mild hints of sweet grains, oats, caramel, and chocolate. very drinkable but not that flavorful and watery mouthfeel (sounds like a beer in munich). carb is smooth a decent and accessible dunkel.

Draught at Hofbrauhaus in Munich. Served up dark brown with reddish hues and a light brown head. Would lace nicely. Malty, doughy, slightly sweet aroma. A basic malty flavor, a bit dry and unremarkable. Medium bodied, dryness lingered.

(1l keg, at Hofbrauhaus) Near black colored, medium sized light brown head. Sweet, caramelly, mildly roasted aroma. Medium bodied. Flavor is more roasted with also this dominating sweetness, coffee also with some drying hops coming in aftertaste. Basic dunkel.
