Commercial Description:
Dark beer existed in Bavaria long before light beer. This was the first type of beer to be brewed at Hofbräuhaus when it was founded. Today, when beer-lovers all over the world talk about dark beer, they usually mean a Munich style beer. Today, Hofbräu Dunkel - the archetypal Bavarian beer - is still as popular as ever. With its alcoholic content of around 5.5% volume and its spicy taste, it’s a refreshing beer that suits all kinds of occasion. A beer in the traditional Munich style!

Tallahassee, Fl. - Market square Liquors, 12 oz bottle. Medium to dark copper pour, slight, beady off-white head. Good, sweet, caramelly aroma with some essence of wort. Flavor has some nice chocolate hints with a backdrop of caramel, some molasses stickiness. Hint of bitterness in the finish. Slightly thin mouthfeel - but not bad for the style. All in all, a most decent Dunkel.

(Draught at Hofbräu München) Clear dark brown color, tan head. Sweet malty a bit roasted scent. Malty sweet taste. Spritzy moutfeel, low bitterness.

Very "beer" smelling - German hops, slight green bottle skunking, blackstrap molasses, toasted grain. Very large head, nice label and cap, medium-dark clear brew. Very balanced, nicely bittered, toasted malty-sweet. Not too heavy, medium mouth, could easily go as a session beer. Finishes cleanly, but with character. I enjoyed this. Market Square Liquors, Tallahassee.

Bottle, but have also tried draft in Munich, which I really enjoyed but did not rate. Mild aroma, malty with a touch of floral. Small, disappointing head, white and fizzy, which quickly diminishes. Medium weight mouthfeel. Flavor starts with toasty molasses, but well balanced with bitter toward the end, which lingers on the palate. Not incredibly complex, but enjoyable.

Rated 7/29/07. Draft at Hofbräuhaus in Las Vegas, NV. Translucent chestnut color with a massive, white, foamy head. Excellent lacing all the way down the glass. The aroma is very fruity, floral and yeasty. The flavor is essentially the same, but it had a somewhat unpleasant metallic tinge to it. The body was rather thin and watery. Refreshing on a 105 degree Las Vegas day, but far from special.

An average dunkel at best. Aroma was alomst 0 but could pick up some malt in there. Pour was a very disappointing flat dark amber/brown with no head at all. Taste was very malty with some dough and dark fruits in the background. OK but not noteable.

At the location in Vegas. A dark redish brown with a large offwhite head. A malty nose and a slightly sweet honey dough taste makes it very easy to drink but pretty standard.
