Commercial Description:
Dark beer existed in Bavaria long before light beer. This was the first type of beer to be brewed at Hofbräuhaus when it was founded. Today, when beer-lovers all over the world talk about dark beer, they usually mean a Munich style beer. Today, Hofbräu Dunkel - the archetypal Bavarian beer - is still as popular as ever. With its alcoholic content of around 5.5% volume and its spicy taste, it’s a refreshing beer that suits all kinds of occasion. A beer in the traditional Munich style!

An average dunkel at best. Aroma was alomst 0 but could pick up some malt in there. Pour was a very disappointing flat dark amber/brown with no head at all. Taste was very malty with some dough and dark fruits in the background. OK but not noteable.

At the location in Vegas. A dark redish brown with a large offwhite head. A malty nose and a slightly sweet honey dough taste makes it very easy to drink but pretty standard.

Vom Fass at Chinesischer Turm München 18 Jun 07. Dark brown coloured with a creamy white head leaving patterns on the glass. Sourish fruity aroma with hints of sweet malt. A bit high carbonation. Flavor dominated by roasted malt. A bit unvaried.

500ml vom fass at the biergarten Chinesischer Turm, Englischer Garten, München. Clear, deep brown body under a thin layer. Fair lacing on the glass. Aroma of sweet malts. Flavour is also dominated by sweet malts balanced by notes of dark fruits. Lingering, rounded bitter end (18.06.2007).

Bottled, new arrival at John’s in Iowa City. The body is medium brown with copper colored edges. The head is thin and light khaki colored. The aroma has bubblegum and tobacco. There is also a little dank fresh earth. Nice and realtively subtle aroma compared to many dunkels I have had. The taste has some notes of milk chocolate and black tea. After you drink a little more you start to get notes of orange peel. Surprising bitterness. Very soft, low carbonated mouthfeel. A great example of how this style can be interesting and drinkable, I am still learning.

Pours a clear brown with a toasted yellow head. Smells of smoke, light ham, caramel, yeast dough and bavarian hops. Flavor is mild, but with strong hops and grain background. Really good drinking beer, excellent with a meal.

Beer 54 Summer 2006 trip in Europe. Drank on 7/10/06. Liter draft mug at Hofbrau House Munich. Very good and smooth and easy to drink, went well with the giant pretzel I ate with it. Yum.
